BUMP AGAIN TTT............................... I guess over the scanner someone informed me that there are two vicious dogs, one black lab and one golden retriever who live on Stanton Street, BEWARE!!!! I seriously do believe these are the two dogs who killed Moe, sure seems like a very strong possibility! To the SPD....... if you get another call / complaint regarding these two dogs then do us all a favor in town here and shoot them in the friggin head! Then the other night they were called out to a house, which I didn't get the address...where there were FOUR mind you FOUR vicious dogs........... all current shots on them, so nothing was done then, WTF? Also today there was an intact male German Shepard running loose without any collar too today.........before I could call SPD that dog was gone...but still though.............. WTF? SO ......... IS THERE ANY ANIMAL CONTROL THEN OR NOT! ? I am truly beginning to wonder................. M

I'm so sorry about Moe!!!. Its crazy how a lot of dog owners are just letting their dogs run and not be held accountable! I love my dogs! I'll be damned if I would let them run! I have an American bulldog and a pit bull. Both are very kind. Both are neutered and UTD on shots. My American.bulldog has gotten out of the house a.couple of.times, I instantly call SPD and let them.know...and I go chasing him...
Its a shame there are 2 ACO's and we don't have either on call. They work the same hours and usually work together. If they would split it up and have one on days and the other on call after hours and rotate... things may get.taken care of.
I've heard there is a group forming that. Is very upset with the way our Aco dept is ran. If anyone is interested in getting in contact with this group ....let me know. I agree with them...something needs to change....

The ACO are on call and often times their phones ring at all hours. Here are some things you SHOULD be aware of:
1: The second ACO doesn't have the equipment to deal with multiple dogs. 2: By law, if the animals are claimed by their owner before the ACO gets on the scene and the dogs haven't actually hurt anyone, they can not take the dog, a ticket can be issued for them being off leash and at large. 3: The ACO have to follow the laws and the rules their bosses lay down. 4: If the ACO wants to go out of town for a night, they have the right to do so just like everyone else. 5: There is no leash law for cats. 6: If a dog runs onto your property and your dog attacks it, you and the your dog are not held accountable for the injuries to that dog. As it was on your property. The other dog was at large and it falls on the other owners shoulders. 7: Yes, both ACO live outside city limits, no it is not unfair. 8: Screaming, stamping, making yourself look bigger then you are, thrusting your body closer to the dog will generally help stop a charge. 9: The ACO has a right to sleep and if they happen to miss a call because of the hour, that's fine because we don't want a half asleep person out there trying to handle aggressive dogs. The cops CAN handle some situations. 10: If your dog goes missing, CALL the police department and city hall to report it! I got a dog once from the shelter, then three months later the last owner was like, OMG MY DOG. So please, call the moment you loose your dog. 11: I am not married nor related to either ACO. 12: NEVER take a dog off someones property, EVER. This is theft, regardless of the situation. Never.. EVER take a dog from its own property. (This has happened.) 13: If a dog is starving, the best thing you can do is call ACO, and not feed it. Peggy, the humane investigator says regardless of how its being fed, if a dog is being fed? They cant take it. So CALL! 14: If you can not control your dog, don't have a dog. Be responsible, leashes, lines and keep verbal command over your dog at all times. Don't loose your pet, or someone elses because you could of bought a five dollar leash and saved a life. Or even a cheap length of rope tied to their collar. 15: Consider an electric fence to keep your dog inside your property. See #6 16: You have the right to protect yourself. If you pass the class you CAN carry a taser if I am not mistaken. 17: Consider a paintball gun. Non lethal, hurts like a b****. 18: German shepherds don't have tear ducts. Pepper spray wont work on them. 19: Other legal ways to protect yourself that will not cause you or anyone else to fall over screaming in eye blinding pain, consider the following: Wild Cat Keychains. A metal baton. A bat A sap cap. Even just a knife.

TY Sporky Dork.........ALthough I think with 2 ACO's they should be able to cover most hours of the day 7 days a week, otherwise, why are the taxpayers paying for 2?
BUT on that note, they also have lives, families, days off, holidays..etc. and NOT EVERY DOG ROAMING IS A VICIOUS KILLER! by some of the posts here, you would think so. I have witnessed SPD officers almost shoot a rot, when it knocked my son off his bike and was standing over him. The dog was not agressive, he was playing. He didnt bite my son, but he did have a claw mark, on his ars. SPD will do the right thing when it comes to an agressive, vicious dog, if the need arises.
and Sporky dorks suggestion for a paint ball gun, or a snap cap..is fantastic. Non harmful, but definatly a painfull deterant. although, with a snap cap.keep in mind you still need a foid card to carry! or a conceal carry permit now.

You're welcome 1NAMillion.
If I remember correctly, the second ACO was hired to handle the paperwork and filing portion of the job while the original ACO does the field work. They are not allowed to respond after city hall hours and only for emergencies. This is why they work the same hours. They don't have the same job descriptions and that's why the second ACO isn't equip to handle as much field work.

I heard most times that YOU actually will go out to "catch" these dogs..I'd like to hear more regarding those incidents.. And..thank you...this is an ongoing problem... M

There should be a full time animal control officer. If there is a need for a full time code enforcement then surely the city needs a FT ACO. I have said so the last 2 times I ran for city council and will continue to do so, the current council calls the band shelter and improvements as improving the quality of life in town. Controlling wild animals in town does the same thing.

Totally in agreement with you FOT...I'm afraid to walk anymore because I have been put into not one, but THREE times an incident with friggin LOOSE dogs,..and that doesn't even include the 2 that literally mauled our cat Moe..to death!!
These running at large dogs..NEVER..used to be an issue in town! AND what the hell happened over the summer when the City was suppose to be going door to door canvasing the town regarding dogs and their current shots.. HUH?
TELL me, and I am not singling out any particular breed here either, BUT..are their NOT certain requirements legally bound pertaining to any Pittbull's?
I really wamt to know!

I would have owned one by now..but good to know though on my own property. M

M M How many poster were AGAINST that "door to door canvansing? "Just another way for the City to Make Money, Infringe on MY rights", blah, blah, blah. Why can't they get in touch with the local ACO when a dog is running loose? It takes funding, it takes (gasp) TAXES. Why can't we get in touch with the ONE ACO in Streator 365/24/7? Golly dam%, why should I be TAXED to pay for an ACO if I don't own a pet? Unfortunately, I pay those taxes for an ACO, and we do need more than one in Streator, because we have too many IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS! g

The pitbull ordinance was dropped a few years back and replaced with an ordinance targeting dog behavior rather than breed. You no longer have to have special requirements in order to own pitbulls.

Your right, there is NO BSL here in town, Thank God. Not all pits are mean. We have a vicious dog ordiance, that is for ALL breeds. It has to do with the number of reported bites against a specific dog. This seems to at least help control the vicious dogs.
When we did have BSL "bullcrap Law" I complied with all the rules, as did approximately 9 other people here in town, and we all know there are alot more pits here than that. I do try to relocate any pits out of town, just because we have so many irresponsible owners and not everyone should own a pit.

Well that's a crock o'crap that they HAVE to had bitten someone resulting in a specific number of bites...before anything is done....WTF!!! Hell LI there are so many people in this town that shouldn't even be allowed to procreate and have children...let alone a dog of any kind.......thank you for at least taking the initiative to re-home some of them (dogs) that is. I'm not sure of the specifics... but I don't believe its black and white.across the board....if its something severe, I've known dogs to be put down on the first bite.... I just don't think any city ordinance should be.against.a specific breed ... any type of dog can become vicious depending on a lot of different things

Oh, I totally agree that specific breeds shouldn't be singled out. It's all in how they are raised in the first place, and if there are more then one running together at large...then will can have that "pack" mentality, which scares the livin hell out of me!! That is exactly what happened to our poor Moe, and also my husband and I when we were charged upon. After all of those incidents transpired...I don't think I will ever walk again. M
