Dog, had a small shop in joliet and they installed a demand meter. Any commercial place of business will have one according to com ed. The rates are different and you get charged "the demand charge because you may require more equipment and use more power" don't ask me how they figure it though. Just know the demand portion of the bill sucked major! Anyhow I still think its a electronic demand meter not a smart meter according to the website.

I bought a gizmo a few years back for the house. It is a essentially a capacitor that stores electricity. The company said in it's brochures that any time a compressor or motor turns on there is a surge in electricity to start it. This capacitor thing is supposed to smooth out that initial start and actually clean up the power supply. I ran it by an electrician friend of mine and a contractor I know prior to purchasing it. They both said it made sense in theory. I had it installed and monitored my bill for a couple of months. It seemed if anything electric bill and usage went up compared to the previous year. I quit using the thing. I will have to check into this demand portion of the bill and how it effects commercial bills. Typically I would say your operation would not probably create any peak loads that would hit your bill, thus the load balancer did nothing, or actually used a bit of juice itself. Where you find something like that useful ( and they don't sell or advertise them that I am aware of )is an industrial facility where you have multiple large motors starting and stopping.

That's why they get you on the peaks, they know people will have to pay more and most will try to save on Electricity, so for the ones who have any handicap so too say items such as c-pap machines and o2 machine and whatever else they will be charged more and they will not have a choice not too. Then you have the ones with (2) deep freezers and so on..........$$$$$$ Also with this great sewer system we have in town with people basements flooding all the time ......the sump pumps will cause a great surge in peaks! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I think that is correct about different rates for different times of day, but it will not be a demand charge.

Cycling your power on & off has nothing to do with the SMs. I got a notice in my bill about a year ago, giving me the OPTION to join THAT program. I don't have a smart meter nor smart appliances.

Neighbor next door has one, because his dog likes to bite people. lol So at least the meter reader can stay away and be safe. It just measures how many KW hours you use and they can read your meter from a mobile unit.

No but when you're power goes off and on, like when a sump pump is running and shutting off all day.... that is a surge of Electricity and those are what they will count as a spike/high peaks if you will, the smart meter already said that it measures the peaks and then they take the high side of it. It will cost a lot more if you are using a smart meter.
