If you don't have anything to hide why so upset. It is the law . Follow it. It has been like this for year's. I think people are mad because it is finally being enforced. I really don't think they are going to do a house search.

They don't need to see proof of vaccination. You cannot get a dog license tag without the dog getting it's rabies shot which is the county tag. A county and city dog tag on the dogs collar should be enough proof.

taken from a Louisville paper....USA
"The Constitutionality of doing door-to-door checks to look for people breaking laws is definitely in question. The 4th Amendment protects us (supposedly) from being searched without reasonable cause that we have done something wrong. We would all instantly see the 4th Amendment being violated if authorities came door-to-door looking for illegal weapons, or to check someone's legal citizenship. And while dog licensing seems innocent enough, it is still a violation of the same Constitutional Law.
The city of Louisville currently has two legal cases (one state, one federal) they are working against for similar activity there. And Two years ago, when a Lucas County, OH (Toledo) dog warden attempted the same type of license checks, and was quickly shut down by the county government because they said it was a waste of time and likely a violation of the 4th Amendment."

When I first read this back when it was announced, my first impression was they had come up with a solution to the complaints of the dog catcher not being available when people tried to call. This way they would be visible to the public, out visibly on the job. I never thought of it as a way for the city to take over our lives, utilizing two young women. How sneaky of them!

It was my understanding that their hours were flexible, and they were more "on call" than sitting in an office, with routine hours. I'm assuming that while they are doing door to door, they will have "animal calls" a priority. Just like the cops, if they are patrolling, and a call comes in it, they take the call, instead of continuing their patrol. Just the way I saw it. Instead of no one knowing the dog catchers, everyone will see them out in the neighborhoods.

They will have to do it after dark, since most people work in the daytime and wouldn't be home.

I didnt read all the comments on this thread, but i did read a few. Let me just say when your dog gets picked up and goes to the barns..there is no fee...ive spoke with ACO...they just dont want the dogs sitting down at the barns...its depressing and effects some dogs negatively. The city tags are nothing new people. The county tags come WITH the rabies shot...and i hope we all agree those are necessary. As far as the county tags, those are important because you can vet that number off the tag and call lasalle county and by giving them the number, you will get a name, address and contact number to where the dog belongs
If anyone doesnt want ACO at their door, im pretty sure your more than welcome to go to city hall and register them yourself.
I agree that cat owners should have to register their cats as well. They shouldnt be allowed to scratch up peoples cars, leave feces wherever they want. Some people are afraid of cats too.
So in all, register your dogs, please. Ive been to the city barns and helped the lost dogs find their homes or forever homes....
I do believe however the dogs that are there should have more exposure....facebook is huge in helping dogs find their way home.....or find new homes if need be.

When they start enforcing the rest of the ordinances, like the one about dog owners cleaning up their dogs' messes in other peoples' yards, maybe I'd be a little more sympathetic. I'd think dog dung all over the place would be a larger issue than who has what dogs. But hey - any way for Streator to make a quick buck. Unless it involves the people in power. Wonder if these two will be knocking on any of their doors?

I have a "Beware of Dog" sign on my door from a dog that passed away years ago. I wonder if this will prompt them to want to "search" my house looking for the dog. lol

They can't enter your house unless you allow them to. If they ask if you have a dog you can lie and say no. Just make sure that the chain and food bowl is out of view. The fees collected will help in taking care of the shelter, provide food, utilities, more live traps, better equipment etc.

I hope City Hall read this. Just what we need, more city money spent, on the lawsuits that could follow.

Aren't you running for City Council? (shakes head)
