Does the City have a legal right to do this? Or is it more of a voluntary issue? I don't like strangers coming to my door, asking questions about how I live. I am kicking around the idea of demanding a valid search warrant. This is way too invasive for me. I didn't have a problem with this before, but now I'm not too sure. When the city is drawing up papers to make sure they can take our pets away, now I don't think I will even be opening my door for them. I believe the "paperwork" being referred to is an updated contract that a dog owner would sign when they no longer want their dog after receiving tickets from the city for ordinance violations pertaining to the dog. Some years back, my neighbor was questioned by an animal control person in regards to not taking care of their dog. They had been called to the house a couple of times for no food, water and shelter in below zero weather. The dog owner said they not only couldn't afford to keep the dog, but no longer wanted it and would be willing to relinquish ownership so the animal control person could remove the dog and find it a better home. The paperwork this guy signed was very simple and somewhat vague. I think the city is looking to come up with a more professional form for the owner to sign when voluntarily giving up their dog so there is no question pertaining to the voluntary relinquish of the dog. As far as licensing our dogs, I don't have a problem with it. Dogs are licensed in cities all over Illinois and the country. This is nothing new. As far as being able to afford the $15 fee....well, if you can't afford the fee you shouldn't have the dog. Simple as that. Just another responsiblity and expense we dog owners have. When the animal control people knock on my door, I'll answer it. I've got nothing to hide. They're just doing their job. As far as cats go...I agree. Cats should be licensed just like a dog. They should also not be allowed to roam the streets...just like a dog. Again, there are cities all over Illinois and the country that require cats be licensed and when they are caught running outdoors, they are picked up and handled just like a loose dog. I believe that if you want such an ordinance implemented in Streator, you should contact a few councilmen and ask them to make a proposal for an ordinance. To my knowledge, Streator would not have to be "home rule" to pass such an ordinance because there is no state law governing cat licensing.

Maybe people will believe now when we say (one world Government= we have no rights as they are slowly being ripped away. And as far as the cats go, I agree there are many more cats than dogs... however a cat is not a threat like a dog would be.

I couldn't afford to license my cats. And before anyone says I shouldn't have them... They are all cats that were dumped/abandoned in my neighborhood. I brought them in to find them homes, but failed. I didn't have the heart to throw them back out in the cold. I have recently taken on an outside cat, that a neighbor decided he no longer wanted. The poor cat is old.

the city has to pay for the 70,000.00 lost at the streator golf course over the last 3 years. it might as well be us dog owners. The Money that has been spent on that Golf Course has been a COSTLY JOKE for US Taxpayers.

I understand the employees of this city can use the golf course for free. The council members should negotiate this perk out of their contracts. I might take up pasture pool, if it were free. The club house might even be able to pay its own way.

If I have to pay for city tag I don't mind but everyone else should have to also. I hope they find some these people who have many dogs or just one that don't take care of them cause there are a lot out there . I see dogs tied to tree's no water in the summer time and in winter out in the cold. They run like crazy in my neighborhood.

"The process was due to begin in November but has been delayed because of training for the city's two animal control officers."You can start CALLING Them to pick up Dogs at large or CHECK on Those that don't have Water or Shelter.

I'm disgusted with the city. Everyone I have spoke with is outraged about this. I am taking a stand with others and invite all others who feel the same to stand up and refuse to let this happen. This is the final straw for me. I have rescued animals all my life and have payed a lot of money to make sure all my pets have the best care and life. I adopted a dog last spring. My dog has a chip and 3 years of rabies shots. I had to purchase a years worth of heartworm pills, before he could go home. I will not give some person 15 for registering my dog, when my dog is registerd with my vet, and the humane society. We can all stand up here people. Why does everyone think that we have to give are hard earned money to someone that had a job created for them? I am all for animal's being treated right, and people being safe. This will not do anything but pay a years salary for this person to go door to door. Speak up!!! If they get away with this....we are truly a lost cause. They will keep making more ordinances and robbing us.

This city tag fee is not new people, nobody created the law to give someone a job! If you have been rescuing animals for years then you should have known about this ordinance a long time ago!

Well, sorry it's news to me and others around here. I have never heard anything about this ordinance. Our local vets have never mentioned it. So, where will the 15 dollars go? Let's see......to pay for the person going door to door? Should bring in around $45,000 dollars. Well done. Let's go door to door and enforce something else. This works great.
