I know I'll get bashed for posting this but I'm saying it anyway. All you people who think Streator is so great need to start getting out more. I have been traveling alot for work lately. Lots of small towns. Mostly towns that have populations of around 2k people. Why do all of these towns have pools? Why do all of these towns have nice parks with playground equipment, tons of flowers planted etc.? One town in Iowa that I have been working in has a walmart, lots of places to eat. And no, it's not next to an interstate. It's 10 miles from the interstate in one direction and 10 miles from a highway in the other direction. It's pretty much stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Streator reminds me of the Catholic Church..they want, want, want from their members but give nothing in return. Streator, in my opinion is just plain depressing. I am not from here..moved here almost 7 years ago. I can tell a HUGE difference in those 7 years and it's not a good difference. Unless something is done, and done quickly, this town is not going to make it. And before somebody says..."If you don't like it, then why don't you move"...I plan on it. I am not on some quest to just bash Streator...I would love to see it become a nice small town...but in reality, it's just not. People need to get their heads out of the sand and look at the big picture. I realize that Streator is hometown to a lot of you folks on here but you need to take the blinders off. Look at it from an outside view. It's not a nice view to look at. In these small Towns you drive threw I'm sure have their problems as well. I do agree Streator needs to get their heads out of the sand. We need some new blood sitting in the decision chairs uptown.

i have to agree with your comments junecleaver. i have lived here for most of my life. it seems the city encourages the citizens to do what we use to pay taxes for. there are smaller towns that have more then streator has like pools. where do these small communities get the funds to redo their pools? also another story in the times press says weed killer was applied to the greens at Anderson fields golf course. it didn't take long for the city council to approve spending lots of money to reseed the Greens. the city worries about the senior citizens more then the young people that is the city's future.

Troll, there is no doubt that any town has their share of problems. But, I think you can get a general sense of the town by spending several days there and talking to the people, which I have.
In my opinion....the very first thing this city needs to do to get this town back is run the drug deals and thugs out of town! It can be done too. Other towns and cities have done it. That's the first thing I would concentrate on.

I do agree the Law needs to crack down on things around here. I don't know that it would be my First Priority?

Well, I work in jails, so I see first hand what crime does. Until crime is brought down, most other things are for naught. Just my opinion.

the city could grade to level the road coming in from otter creek rd. they then could oil and chip it to where the road starts to go downhill. at that point what needs to be done is a retaining wall like the state uses on the east side of the road to hold it together. crown the road in the middle so that the water runs off on both sides. blacktop this section down to the existing blacktop. this should help with erosion and direct the water to the drainage areas.

Spring lake has been cited as an example of what can be done. That was not only accomplished by a great group of volunteers, its been monitored closely by a group that devotes a lot of time to protecting their hard work. But, how many threads have bashed those people for the close eye they keep to keep it the great place it has become. Just recently the 4th had how many threads that turned to complaints, rather than 100% praise? Same with the clock corner. That corner has been an eyesore for so long, but really is looking great. People need to realize that taxes only go so far. Effort is what make these small communities thrive. And commitment. Marilla could be great. But not without effort. If there are so many that want this, why not form a committee to get it done. That's what the 4th of July committee did. And Spring lake. And the clock corner.

It says they either have to replace the bridge, or access from the east with a road. Then, didn't they end by saying they were looking into costs of options? Who wants to form a committee? 1. Helen Crump 2.

I guess we will see how many really want to see this place meet its potential, won't we?
By opposition, I was referring to the citizens of streator. Just to be clear.

I know I will probably get an ear full for this suggestion, but there is a city council meeting next Wednesday at 7pm. The council does listen to people when they come in and politely explain their views. It may be worth a shot. If no one attends and speaks out, then they may not know how strongly the community feels about something. Nothing may come of it, but at least you tried. Been there, done that, waste of time.
