i have to agree with your comments junecleaver. i have lived here for most of my life. it seems the city encourages the citizens to do what we use to pay taxes for. there are smaller towns that have more then streator has like pools. where do these small communities get the funds to redo their pools? also another story in the times press says weed killer was applied to the greens at Anderson fields golf course. it didn't take long for the city council to approve spending lots of money to reseed the Greens. the city worries about the senior citizens more then the young people that is the city's future. Um, not sure where you got the city is reseeding greens at Anderson Fields? Somebody should lose his/her job for ruining the greens again this year. The greens now have crabgrass and other small weeds growing on them. It's ridiculous as I never seen such a poorly maintained golf course.

Yeah, I saw it after I replied to your post Dive. For those that have never used Anderson Fields, it costs $27 for 18 holes and a cart. That's higher than Twin Creeks, Dayton Ridge(DaDeCo) and several other local courses. The greens were horrible last year too. Someone needs to lose their job. This person has a nice cushy city job with all the benefits that entails. If they take the fence down, I forsee lots of damage to cars at the credit union.

Thinking of taking the munchkins and the puppy on a picnic, anyone want to go, I have the perfect place, well maintained, beautiful club house, I mean isn't the city always saying Anderson field is for EVERYONES enjoyment, since I don't golf and they don't give a rats patooty about any of the parks in town, we should just go there.

The park south of Sherman school is horribly maintained also. The old tennis court site is atrocious. The fence is falling down, has weeds and vines growing in/on the fence. Some kid will get hurt and a lawsuit will happen. How do small towns like Minonk have beautiful parks/facilities and Streator doesn't. There are NO outdoor basketball courts in a city park anywhere, not to mention tennis courts, or other athletic activities.

I guess the city will close it down and someone will have to start a commitee for the upkeep and to keep it open..

I believe Mr. Palm said a 3rd option would be to close the park entirely. What would those that live beyond Marilla Park and need a way out do? Would that then become the responsibility of the township? If the official entrance isnt until after the bridge the city could close off the park and not need to maintain the bridge. There would be cost for fencing though to keep out trespassers. M ost other towns have some sort of parks/recreation districts in them that have a separate taxing body. For $10 a year in property tax per household here in Streator there could be approx. $60,000 raised to pay for upkeep, new/repair equipment, handicapped accessible picnic tables, etc to all the parks in Streator in addition to the money they already contribute for upkeep. Would the citizens be willing to pay a small amount for the upkeep of the parks?

I know I will probably get an ear full for this suggestion, but there is a city council meeting next Wednesday at 7pm. The council does listen to people when they come in and politely explain their views. It may be worth a shot. If no one attends and speaks out, then they may not know how strongly the community feels about something. Nothing may come of it, but at least you tried. Agreed. Went in with a group of teens to the city council meeting for The Rec I went up there and spoke. I have 9 kids show up, before the meeting every single one said that they are petrified of speaking in a group setting like that, every single one of them got up there but maybe two and spoke on how The Rec has helped them. To say the least it moved several of the city council meetings and told us great job. We will see if they show up at our opening or not. One person taking a stand doesn't go as far as a GROUP of people taking a stand. Fill up the room, fill up the hall walls, if we all have the same goal we wanna achieve, and the community is coming together to speak their distress of the situation, what option do they have BUT to change. Don't get the response you want the first time do it again the next meeting. They will eventually get tired of having three hour meetings and hearing the same issue over and over again.
