Well, Streator Grade school, Streator High school, and I believe even St. Micheal school is still in session. Woodlawn school has cancelled last night.

i have 4 below on my thermometer and there are kids standing at the bus stop. Could be like that for the next two weeks for all we know. It's always the same dance, last year there was a few cancellations in a row and they ended up going back on a worse day because at what point do you just say no more?

i have 4 below on my thermometer and there are kids standing at the bus stop. I have not been outside yet. My son left for work around 4:45 this morning. I saw two school buses pass my house like they usually do. The one stops at the house across the street for a pick up.

I remember a few years back that the schools had used their allowed amount of closure and then some.. The Streator High school made up days by having school on the days that were scheduled off. That should be in the policy to begin with. That if the school district has to cancel school, it should be automatically be reschedule on those days that are scheduled days off. Just my opinion though.

Just my opinion though. School districts already build in extra days for potential snow days, and generally speaking after so many they are considered an act of God. To be specific, schools must do a minimum of 5, but can build in up to 10, and all of them must be used before an act of God day can be requested.

I was just thinking though, that if after the so many of "Act of God", and not making up those days means that the school year is extended. Just thinking by using those already schedule days for make up days would make up for not having to extend the school year. Like I said, I understand what you are saying.

Can an "act of god" absence day , count towards the yearly minimum 176 pupil attendance days Illinois? Yes but to be clear the Regional office of Education signs off on that. So you can't just declare an act of God and stop going. I can't think of any time recently it has occured. Which is why schools who call off to many too early usually end up going in worse conditions later.

So....just how does the school superintendent or the regional superintendent or the state superintendent deem whether or not it is an act of God? Do those superintendents higher up the totem pole have a closer relationship with God? Does anyone really think that God sits back and thinks...Hmmmm, my children really need a break from the rigors of being schooled and need some time off to sit at home and play games. I'm going to make it cold so they can stay home.
I think NOT.
The school has heat. The school buses have heaters and they are most plugged in at night to block heater to help them start on cold mornings and if the bus driver is worth his salt, he/she will arrive to start the bus a little earlier to get things warming up not to mention 55 to 65 warm bodies on the bus helps too. This is 22 years of bus driving speaking.
Wrapping this up, I say BS to the act of God argument. This is Illinois and this is typical variable winter weather that we have all experienced before and will experience in future winters ahead.

Again it rarely happens, and you have to remember it doesn't necessarily have to be snow days, it would also cover natural disasters, maybe there is a gas leak, sewage problems, power outage etc etc, there is plenty of references to act of God in law. State superintendent isn't gonna just sign off on it. I was just pointing out there is a few layers of over sight.

What with all the arguments about separation of church and state and the fights about prayer and references to God in the state/taxpayer supported school systems I would think the "Act of God" excuse to call off school will eventually end up being challenged in the court system.
I'm not saying it is right or wrong. Just stating a point. Does this mean that anything that is out of human control is an act of God? One thing for sure is this topic is excersizing my mind and making me want to write far much more than my forefinger wants to poke out on this teeny phone keyboard.
