OSF purchasing St.Marys Hospital was done to close it. That was the plan from the start. A little outcry from the community isn't going to sway OSF. Please I don't know if that was the intention of OSF, to close the hospital. But with having OSF both North of us and south of us, It would not make any sense for them to have one in Streator. OSF has Specialist, and no specialist in this town, to begin with. Having specialist is a big factor. When people have to drive to see a specialist, to begin with. And not trusting the doctors that are here is another factor for the hospital closing. Specialist are not wanting to come to Streator, for what ever the reasoning. Of course it was the intention. This way they have the outpatient clinic here in Streator and then they refer the patients here to either Pontiac or Ottawa. There is no need to maintain that huge hospital. It was a solid business move by OSF. Now, I wish IVCH would open an outpatient clinic in Streator to compete with OSF. Then that would have an adverse effect on the OSF business plan. IVCH would refer Streator patients to IVCH in Peru.

If they didn't sell it was gonna close anyway. They didn't have enough business for probably a combination of all the reasons that have been discussed. In my opinion, losing the ER isn't a loss. It was lousy service anyway. What's the point of getting there in 5-6 minutes when you sit there for couple hours waiting to even see the Dr when he is there at the desk and there is NO ONE IN THE ER BUT YOU.

it was reported that one of the members on the review board was asleep while hearing the discussions of the closing. The man next to him had to nudge him for his vote, at one time. He as well as another nodded off, several times thru the day. He was a retired justice, and complained about having to listen to so many ppl. That included those from Streator as well as Mercy/Rockford! Their new hospital was approved.

www.mywebtimes.com/news/local/governor-signs-streator-s-er-legislation/article_ca0c4349-0c73-53b4-b15a-152699003dc7.htmlSt. Mary’s Hospital in Streator will be allowed to become a standalone emergency room, under a new law sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, representing many who recognize the importance of access to health care for the city. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed House Bill 3213 Friday. The new law has an immediate effective date. “This is vital for the people of Streator and the communities surrounding the city,” Rezin said in a release. “I am grateful we could get this legislation passed and signed into law quickly, as keeping an emergency room in Streator is critical in saving people’s lives and making sure the health of citizens in that area are not put in jeopardy.” Earlier this year, it was announced Peoria-based OSF would purchase St. Mary’s Hospital owned by Springfield-based HSHS and take control of the Streator facility in early 2016. Inpatient services are planned to be eliminated. Without a change in law, OSF would not have been allowed to operate an emergency room without in-patient services. House Bill 3213, however, now allows St. Mary’s to keep its ER without providing in-patient services. "With the size of Streator, it doesn’t make sense to not have an emergency room,” Rezin explained. “People would have had to drive up to 30 miles to get to the nearest emergency room without this legislation. Time means everything when it comes to saving lives.” Rezin says the new law also is imperative in maintaining jobs, doctors and high tech technology for the Streator area. HSHS and OSF have previously agreed to work together to provide a seamless transition. OSF officials said they will offer ambulatory care in the outpatient setting, offering lab tests, X-rays, and now emergency care, saving Streator residents from a 30-minute drive for these services.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the state has to step in and force A CHURCH -- which owns the hospital -- to keep the emergency room open to help save lives?

Do you really think that the state really cares if a hospital stays open or not? But there has to be more than just Streator having issues in order for the state to step in.

Nationalize health care does not work, I am surprised no one mentioned that, the state only pays for 30% of any bills, most Doctors are leaving because of Nationalize health care, that has to be one main reason for the closing..... but they rather keep a lid on that. Any one agree?
