With the changing landscape of healthcare, it is very difficult for a community hospital to survive in a rural setting. One of the things I could see happening is for the facility to be converted to a free standing emergent care/medical office facility. This has been common with the smaller community hospitals that we provide transport for in Ohio.
These facilities will house primary care services such as doctor's offices, lab, x-ray, physical and occupational therapy, and possibly an urgent care location where you can be seen and receive primary treatment for emergencies, but will be transferred out for more complex cases such as strokes, heart attacks, trauma related injuries, etc.

I would think OSF would be all over it. It's in between Ottawa and Pontiac. Run it on a smaller scale and send big things to the other two.

Pretty bad when the Bloomington Drs say stay away from Streator Hospital, they refer you to Ottawa.

No business or respectable family wants to live or set up shop on sh•thole town. Why do you think the clinic was built in south Ottawa? There is no money to be made catering to polar pop buyers.

It could be possible, that more people would go to St. Mary's if they actually did something for you. If you're in the ER, you apparently need attention now. Not go see your doctor. You actually clean up an accident victim to see how bad the wounds are. Not tell them to go home and take a shower. True story sad to say.

Father of 2 can tell you what percentage of kids get free lunches or get state assistance just to attend school.
That will give you an idea of how many patients that go to st. Mary's are on state cards for health care. It has to be off the charts high.
The state isn't paying its bills right now and when it does it takes month.
What hospital owner wants that? Couple that with the fact that it's a small town and small towns the size of Streator just don't have hospitals the size of st Mary's anymore.

As more and more money losing patients come in, the ability to overcharge those with Insurance is less, and financial losses increase, causing them to cut services, and pull the death spiral tighter..
