1943 accident at this same place killed 79 injured 115. But that train was full up to 500 ppl. and broke an axil. My knee jerk reaction is speed at a curve. It was to go from 70 MPH to 50 at the curve. We shall see..... Yes, it was the same curve, wasn't it?

Uncomfirmed but reliable people I know aka People in Philly that work for Amtrak are saying that the Train was doing 107 in a 50 MPH Curve. The Engineer is refusing to cooperate at all.

The NTSB is a confirmed source. That's probably where your unconfirmed people got their info. As it's been out there.

Yes I seen the news about this and looks like the train was doing over 100mph......why don't they install a device that would slow speed down on a Automatic lever to the speed limit at curves? would be something too look into.

Amtrak has PTC which would have slowed the train down already between Baltimore and Washington and NYC and Boston just not between Baltimore and NYC yet for trains going Eastbound. Any other one of their trains would have been SLOWED DOWN Automatically before derailment. It is just they have not gotten all the Bugs out of the System yet for that stretch for the Postive Train Control. 2 Guesses on why the Engineer was speeding Cell Phone or he was Tired and passed out and only woke up when the Overspeed warning went off in his Ear at 120 DB.

Yes, because we cannot expect highly compensated professional employees to do their job correctly............. We need to spend more money to do their jobs.
It would seem to me, if we are going to relieve humans of the responsibility of their jobs, we would institute self driving trains before we worried about cars......... After all, they wouldn't do drugs, text, fall asleep.......

Congress has been starving AMTRAK for several decades. This really bad accident could eventually get heir minds right. I've been on this track several times. The trains from D.C to NYC are all electric and go upwards of 100 MPH. It was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad over 100 years ago. They have been patching it up ever since the AMTRAK took over in 1972. Yet again, it is the Republicans' fault. If the Republicans had given Obama the Infrastructure money he wanted, the Engineer would not have been going so fast or some device would have stopped him.

Engineer says he doesn't remember a thing. Aren't these people under the Fed Hogg Rule? i.e. limit on time worked just like truck drivers.

The railway that goes through Dwight is capable of handling 100 MPH trains. They are still working to get a 100 MPH train from Chicago to St Louis. Stops at Bloomington and Springfield may make it $$$ feasible. I think that the "NE Corridor" from D.C. to NYC makes sense and $$. It is being extended to Boston now. Some politicos want to spin it off and sell it to a private Co.
