For people that think being a Truck Driver is easy since all you have to do is Drive well here is a Breakdown of what your dealing with. People that have NO CLUE as to what the normal Stopping Distance is for a Truck Cutting you off and then trying to make an Exit in front of you then for fun your dealing with Shippers and Receivers that have no clue as to why you might need access to a Restroom or a breakroom to get something to eat. Heaven help you if you get Sick on the road as most Hospitals do NOT HAVE Truck Parking. Then throw in for fun the fact your dealing with weather that can go from clear and dry to storming in less than 2 mins. Then throw in cities that are not DESIGNED for the trailers we pull and States that think the Trucker is nothing more than a Rolling ATM for their Treasury anymore.

Close to 7 years with 3 Intrastate til I turned 21 then I went almost 4 more Interstate I saw 47 of the 48 states in that time. I had to have my Gallbladder removed in Evanston WY at the Local Hospital there lets just say finding a Parking spot was Fun. Try taking a 53 foot trailer into Downtown Philly or Boston or better yet have to make a delivery in Boston. Try running across Oklahoma with a Tornado about 2 miles behind you and it is Chasing YOUR BUTT. I had deliveries in Hurricane ravaged areas of the South. Try being the first truck into a Hurricane Zone when your hauling Water for people that have nothing to drink. It gets to you. Yet OTR drivers that do things like this are Maligned for being Roadhogs an other things. Here is my Challenge to everyone on this Board name ONE THING besides the air you breathe that a Truck and its Driver plays NO PART in getting to your house. There is Nothing we use in our Lives that a Truck has No part in getting to your House from the Water we Drink to the power we use to light it a Truck was used some place to get it to your house.

There isn't one thing about your job that would put me behind the wheel of one of those semis. It's a very dangerous job, no matter the weather. I'm not envious of folks that make more money than me. Most of the time they're earning it. I've a friend that his work schedule is a 14 hour day. He's home everynight but he's also in the rack most home hours. He drives everyday to Indy, unloads his truck and faces the 4 hours home everyday. You can have that job all you want. Have a nice day ironeagle.

Right now my Wife would be thrilled to find something more than a Minimum wage Job in this Area. The only reason why we are Surviving at all is because I got on SSDI a Decade ago and when I could work I busted MYbuttso freaking hard as an OTR driver making 50-60 K in a Year in the late 90's. I was the kind of driver that stayed out 2-3 MONTHS at a time. I stayed out so much that it was my Company that ordered me home one time saying either we send you home or you change your address. It was nothing for me to run 3500-3800 miles in a week then I became a Trainer at my last company and really started to rake in the cash. Can you say 5000-6000 miles in a week making around 38 cents a mile for all miles that truck ran. I was sending home 1500 a month to my parents to use to help them stay at home when my mother was sick with her heart acting up. When I got my award from SSDI I was already getting more than my Father was. I wish I could go back to work however 3 different docs have all told me the same thing the Surgery I need to fix my brain to the point I could resume a Normal life without Seizures would more than likely Kill me as where my Focal Point is located is right beside the last spot of my brain that is still allowing my body to Breathe after my 2 massive Strokes I suffered in 2001. I hate being Disabled as I remember what I used to be able to do. I loved my career and I wish I was still out there Everyday. However I am never going back out there so I deal with it as best as I can. Yes it was a huge hit in the Pocket going from 50K NET to if my wife and I are Lucky 36 K Gross this year. BTW that amount was in 2000 at my last Carrier I was at running like I would today I would be Grossing over 80 Grand a Year and Netting 60 Grand of that. My Wife and I are raising 3 Kids on Half of what we should be thanks to my being Disabled. Yet our Teachers and School Board think they Deserve more Money out of People Like Me when they are getting Thousand dollar or more Raises every Year. My COLA for myself and My Daughter for this Year is a TOTAL of 400 bucks for the Year. My wife just got a 25 cent an hour raise because she became a closing Manager at her job. It might buy us a Pizza once a Month. So do not give me this Crap Butters about 32 K being a Slap in the Face as a Starting Wage a lot of people in this town do a lot with just a Little more and make it Work. I highly Doubt the Nurses at St Marys make more than that and they are responsible for your LIFE in the Hospital. I know my Mother Never Made More than 30 Grand as a Nurse and she was at St Mary's for 20 Years. It is Rare around here to see a job that pays 15 an Hour anymore. Even Petsmart your lucky to get what 12-13 an hour. ineagle, I'm confused how you hate the U.S. Government so much when obviously it is your primary source of income. What are you and your family gonna do should that safety net be taken away? g

Greek why am I disgusted at the Government is when they start seeing things that should never be touched and all of a Sudden they have to REWRITE everything to make room for the current Discriminated group. Take Gay Marriage where anywhere in the US Constitution does it Mention Marriage of Any type in that document at all. Next is how here in ILLINOIS regardless of what the People want aka Term Limits if King Mike Madigan does not want it IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. You are Aware Greek that the Petition to Put a Constitutional Amendment up for a Vote to the People had 2 Times the Signatures REQUIRED however the Chicago Machine said NO and we will never get rid of the most Corrupt Politicans in the NATION. Do not give me teh crap we can vote them out every 4 years with how they have Gerrymandered their Districts the ONLY way they leave office and stop Sucking at the TIT of the Taxpayers is when they DIE or are indicted anymore here in IL.
Yes I am on SSDI I was forced to go onto it due to a TBI that has led me to suffer 2 Strokes and seizures so severe that I have had to have 18 Screws a 2 inch Pin and 6 kevlar and Stainless Steel wires in my right Shoulder to repair the Damage that was done from them. Also as a result of the strokes I 2 years ago came down with Severe Atrial Fibrillation that required me to have a Defibrillator pacemaker installed in my chest this summer. So if you think I am happy about being Disabled and not worried about My life and My Kids Future your NUTS. Every single day I pray that my kids end up better than me. So when I hear the School board Screaming we Need more Money when they are Overpaying Admins and such sorry their ADMINS need to live on a Real World Salary of what people make in this area for a year.
BTW I was a Student at SHS during the Years of 89-93 and I remember the Staff and Class Cuts. Instead of cutting Extra stuff like Sports first they picked the Most Painful things for the Students. Notice a Pattern here they Left the Football Program the Basketball the Baseball Softball and all the OTHER SPORTS alone. Instead they hammered the Industrial Arts the Shop Classes the classes that would teach Kids on how to be a GOOD WORKER.

The school board isn't screaming we want more money from the taxpayers. We voted to put the question on the ballot to let the taxpayers say to the state that you either will or won't pay for what they should be paying. I voted yes to put it on the ballot but I am against it. Without the money the state is not paying anymore things are going to get worse until they pay up. The state told the district it needs to either make more cuts or increase revenue, I don't believe teachers are overpaid. I know there aren't many who would care to deal with 20-30 kids on a room each day. Some people can't take care of their own kids let alone that many. They have to do more record keeping, keep conforming to new ways to teach, common core, NCLB, IEP meetings. I know, they work half a year. But many put in 10-12 hours a day, 5 days a week. Plus continuing education during the summer and they put in 1800-2200 hours a year. If teaching was easy more would do it.

FOT any Tax INCREASE by any branch of Government means SORRY WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM we need MORE OF YOUR MONEY TO FIX OUR PROBLEM THAT WE CAN NOT CONTROL. The US Government took in over 3.4 TRILLION Dollars Last Year in Revenue and spent over 4 Trillion the State of Illinois Took in over 34 Billion and wants to spend 38 Billion. The SES over spent by a Million Bucks after taking in close to what 18 Million. LaSalle County overspent by what 7 Million. See the Problem it is NOT A REVENUE ISSUE it is called the People in Power refuse to SAY NO TO THE GOVERNMENT UNIONS and always assume the Taxpayers will be WILLING to bend over and let more of their Hard earned cash go to the Government. When is it enough when the Government takes your ENTIRE Check to run. The US Government is over 18 Trillion in Debt. Yes I am taking more from SS than I ever Paid in I know that I tried for 4 years to stay off of SSDI when I became Disabled. I tried Office Work at both GECFLS in MN and Hilton here in Town. I refused to give up even after being carted out of Hilton 10 times in less than 6 months. I have Never quit Fighting to get better. Just now I am at the point where working in Impossible for me.
BTW when I worked OTR my normal Year was about 8000 HOURS a YEAR away from my Loved Ones. Soldiers that are Deployed to a War get more time with their Family than Most OTR Drivers. Yet without the close to 4 Million Trucks on the Road and the 5 Million drivers in them this Economy and Nation would grind to a HALT in less than 2 weeks. About 1/3 of all trucks are what are considered Team Trucks where 2 Drivers are in them. I ran Team for 1 year with my Late Father in 97-98 and if you think being a Teacher is Hard you try that for 30 days. Here is what a Team truck operation consists of. You drive your shift of 10 hour then while your Partner drives you TRY and sleep for your Break. Never mind the fact that your going up to 75 MPH and bouncing like a bucking Bronco all over the place.

Iron eagle, I'm trying to explain this simply. The state has taken away $1.200,000 from our district. If they were still paying that amount to us we would have a balanced budget.
The state is requiring that we try to increase revenue. I'm not in favor of that when its the state who put us in this position. I am also not in favor of increasing wages in our district when we are in this financial situation. Most taxpayers in this district have not had raises in years and pay a lot towards insurance along with high deductibles. To me, we need to reflect this with our employees. Broke is broke.

Ironeagle, no one is saying that truck drivers dont work hard. But, its not realistic for you to think that others dont work hard at their jobs.
And you stated earlier that if you were still working, you would be earning $80,000. You stated that your yearly income currently is $36,000 on disability and your wifes minimum wage job. And you qualify for a medical card, which is a huge savings. But yet, you expect teachers to be happy with less than $32,000 after accruing thousands in student loans. Why do you think that the service they render is less worthy than that of a truck driver? After all, its us as CONSUMERS that payed you as a truck driver , and provided that huge salary thats enabling you to get the amount you do in disablity.

I think that you have explained the district's fiscal plight very well. The state's refusal to meet its financial commitment to schools has hurt those schools, like Streator, that have traditionally relied upon state financing. The property tax system, while held constitutional, gives an unfair advantage to those districts which have large real estate tax bases: Franklin Park, Seneca, Byron etc. Similarly, affluent suburbs have taxpayers that can pay large real estate tax bills. When we lived in Flossmoor, nearly 15 years ago, we paid $15,000 a year in real estate taxes. I can't imagine what taxes exist there now. I think that it is disgusting for the state to throw increased responsibility upon districts which are "real estate poor." Finally, it is the state, not local school districts, which has created the pension mess.

That 80K would have been if I was a trainer making sure the Next Generation of drivers KNEW how to do the job and not just be a Steering wheel holder that if something goes bad on the truck or trailer he is not Worthless and can not even change a light bulb. A normal Solo Driver would still be about 60 K a year. Yes I busted my arse at that company and the others I drove for. I still hold some records at carriers that have never been matched over 14 years later. Fastest Solo trip in from the West Coast Legal less than 47 Hours. Fastest Trip out to the West Coast from KC under 36. I ran hard and fast when the Loads required me to. Towards the end I got to be known as the One Man Team if needed meaning if I had the Hours to use I could and Would LEGALLY run 15 in one day.
No what is Disgusting about SES 44 is they are still trying to run their District like they did when Streator Had 2 Glass Plants and a Tax Base that would SUPPORT such a Top Heavy Administration. Yes we are getting the Shaft from the STATE nothing has changed on that in over 30 YEARS. Chicago sucks this state Dry when it comes to Education Dollars it is time for the Board to start cutting the Fat out of this Patient before it Dies. BTW I was in the Last Graduation Class of SES 45 so that gives you an Idea of how much I know about how Screwed up this Cities Education System is. At that time SES was 4.5 Million in the Hole from OVERSPENDING and it was either Swallow up the Eagle School District or start facing the Same Cuts the BOARD NEEDS TO DO NOW. We got lucky then the Merger passed IIRC by 20 votes in the Eagle School District I wonder how many of the Parents of those kids wish they could change their Votes today.
