What the State Board of Education will do is form a panel, made up of qualified and experienced people that have served in their own communities. That panel will then take over the functions of the local school board. They will make the overall difficult decisions on behalf of the local board and can do everything but set your taxing rate. Back in the '90's Everett Solon, who was President of the High School Board was put on such a panel. They made all the decisions for a school district up north, Oregon I believe. The result was a consolidation.
Also back in '90 and '91 Streator High District 40 had 4 failed attempts to pass a referendum. Only after massive cuts, ripping apart of the classes to be offered still didn't get it passed. In the spring of '92 we lowered the amount requested for the passage and eliminated any chance of outside funding for sports. People were ready to string us all up when we ditched the sports, but guess what, it passed. Only after it passed did we allow SOS to collect donations to fund sports in part for the next couple of years.
I've already said I don't believe this will pass. The number chosen is probably way to high to ask folks to pass it. Can there be more cuts, I don't know, but I trust the board of education to do what's best for the community. I also know that when we made all the staff cuts at Streator High, we lost some pretty good educators and the curriculum cuts only hurt the kids that weren't expected to go to college. We all know college isn't for all, but what then do those kids take to peak their interest in school.
And don't everyone start talking about the consolidation of both districts into one. Streator High School is a larger district than the grade school. It wouldn't be prudent for the tax payers to shrink that district to the size of the grade school. The only way to consolidate the districts is for the grade school to petition the homeowners not in the high school district to join. Fat chance of that because a long time ago they petitioned out of the district and went into Grand Ridge. How it happened I don't know, it just happened over years.
I'm not suggesting that anyone vote for this referendum, it's too high, but I also know that even if all the suggested ideas on this forum happened, people still wouldn't vote for it. I believe only one has ever passed, and we won't see another while I'm above the sod.

A. Teachers didn't decide on or set up the source of funding for their profession.
b. School boards disagree with you about this and this.
c. You are as clueless as to what K-12 teachers do for a living as any of them would be about what you do for a living. Your opinion is next to worthless.
But Teachers sure do suck up the gravy their Union provides........... Butters, don't even DREAM you have a clue. Teaching is hardly a difficult profession, if you think it is, then you might want to come out into the real world for a bit. If my opinion is worthless, then so perhaps are the tax dollars I provide?

All of us on here took a job that we either wanted or we got stuck with. After we've lived most of our lives, we shouldn't always be complaining at the choices we made. We made it and that should speak for itself. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be a truck driver my entire life. That's a tough job and you're never home to spend the money you make. I wouldn't have wanted to be a postal carrier either. Another tough job in all seasons. A good percentage of people reading this may have had the opportunity to become a teacher, but for a great period of time the pay wasn't there. Now it is and all we want to do is dump on the people that chose that honorable profession. There are more good teachers than there are bad, just like all professions, some good and some bad. In my opinion, blaming teachers for the faults of elected officials over so many years is just not right.

Likewise, being an engineer is hardly a difficult profession with the proper skill set, even in the real world.

All of this back and forth snipping between posters brings to memory some of the management types I have encountered in my almost 40 yrs. in the full time workforce
I always heard how our job could be done by anybody, how we were overcompensated, how they could hire people for less, etc.
Amazing thing was not a single management person could do the job for longer than a day or two
I don't work at that particular company today but they cannot find qualified people to do the job as they are constantly running ads, if they do find somebody they are gone quickly as they don't want to work the hours, do the physical labor, or put up with the conditions and they either quit or get hurt and go on work comp. This particular job pays very well and has good benefits for this area also I might add.
Armchair quarterbacks are plentiful, give them the ball though and they drop it quickly

For all of you who have great ideas, there is an opening on each school board here in town. All you need to do is file as a write in candidate and you're in. If nobody does then the position is filled by appointment. Everyone talks about what should be done but only a few choose to decide to do it. Sad.

That is the BEAUTY of the free market, Incompetence is rewarded with Bankruptcy. All we ask is that free market principles be applied to those professions that we are forced to pay for. It is a VERY simple concept unless you have had your mouth to the teat for too long.
