Lets see here a couple years ago Experienced OTR Drivers started to LEAVE the Trucking Industry due to Low Pay and other Issues. How did the Companies respond they raised Pay I know of one company that raised pay 30% and also lowered how much drivers pay for their Insurance. Another boosted pay 40% and also raised their Speed 3 MPH. Just doing that lowered their turnover 60%

It would be nice to have a matching 401k retirement program available. Streator teachers pay more than $2k a year for insurance. Butterbean, do you consider $32,000 low for a starting wage? Would $4,000 less deter people from still applying? Lots of unemployed people out there, including college grads with teaching degrees. Ironeagle said " wife can get are Minimum wage. We are lucky if we with my SSDI and Dependent Benefits are going to get 36 Grand this year." add in the benefit of the medical card, why would a teacher want to even work at that salary, when ironeagle says his family will be bringing in more? Why accrue all the student loan debt when they arent going to make enough to pay it off? If we dont stop making teachers into villains, there wont be anyone willing to teach.

No, what he is saying is the evil owners cut wages, people quit working, and in response, the owners had to raise wages and bennies to attract qualified workers. Free markets work when they are tried. I wonder how many of us would hop all over the Teachers job?

My oldest left teaching, and is now making a great more, with much better benefits, and if she has to work extra, gets paid for it. As a dedicated teacher, she was working all evening, and weekends. She was using her salary to provide necessities for the classroom. Once she had kids of her own, she made the decision to find a 9-5, 40hr/wk job. After many years, she still gets requests to come back to teaching. I have heard many other similar scenarios. Those who can...teach until they are tired of hitting a brick wall...then they move on.

Right now my Wife would be thrilled to find something more than a Minimum wage Job in this Area. The only reason why we are Surviving at all is because I got on SSDI a Decade ago and when I could work I busted MYassso freaking hard as an OTR driver making 50-60 K in a Year in the late 90's. I was the kind of driver that stayed out 2-3 MONTHS at a time. I stayed out so much that it was my Company that ordered me home one time saying either we send you home or you change your address. It was nothing for me to run 3500-3800 miles in a week then I became a Trainer at my last company and really started to rake in the cash. Can you say 5000-6000 miles in a week making around 38 cents a mile for all miles that truck ran. I was sending home 1500 a month to my parents to use to help them stay at home when my mother was sick with her heart acting up.
When I got my award from SSDI I was already getting more than my Father was. I wish I could go back to work however 3 different docs have all told me the same thing the Surgery I need to fix my brain to the point I could resume a Normal life without Seizures would more than likely Kill me as where my Focal Point is located is right beside the last spot of my brain that is still allowing my body to Breathe after my 2 massive Strokes I suffered in 2001. I hate being Disabled as I remember what I used to be able to do. I loved my career and I wish I was still out there Everyday. However I am never going back out there so I deal with it as best as I can. Yes it was a huge hit in the Pocket going from 50K NET to if my wife and I are Lucky 36 K Gross this year. BTW that amount was in 2000 at my last Carrier I was at running like I would today I would be Grossing over 80 Grand a Year and Netting 60 Grand of that. My Wife and I are raising 3 Kids on Half of what we should be thanks to my being Disabled. Yet our Teachers and School Board think they Deserve more Money out of People Like Me when they are getting Thousand dollar or more Raises every Year. My COLA for myself and My Daughter for this Year is a TOTAL of 400 bucks for the Year. My wife just got a 25 cent an hour raise because she became a closing Manager at her job. It might buy us a Pizza once a Month.
So do not give me this Crap Butters about 32 K being a Slap in the Face as a Starting Wage a lot of people in this town do a lot with just a Little more and make it Work. I highly Doubt the Nurses at St Marys make more than that and they are responsible for your LIFE in the Hospital. I know my Mother Never Made More than 30 Grand as a Nurse and she was at St Mary's for 20 Years. It is Rare around here to see a job that pays 15 an Hour anymore. Even Petsmart your lucky to get what 12-13 an hour.

Heck my ex girl friend made $14.00 an hour as a LPN (2)year degree and that was 17 years ago. So you could x that by two for a RN and working in the bigger cities they make 45-50 an hour

Wages are paid to people for what they KNOW (School, training...) and what they can DO and many considerations go into what certain salaries are for certain jobs/professions. Our opinions differ about this particular subject. That subject will just have to stay contentious, I guess...

You seem to be saying that its perfectly fine with you for teachers to start below 32,000 and pay their own insurance, while trying to pay their student loans off. After you've stated that your household struggles on 36,000 with a medical card, and a stay at home dad to offset childcare.

Butters. then we should pay more because a Neurosurgeon happens to teach the first grade? Of COURSE I am being over the top and contentious, but no one will engage as to the NECESSITY of advanced degrees for the Elementary and High School educational process.
Just because someone goes to school ( of which advanced levels are usually paid for by the Taxpayers ), does not mean one is automatically entitled to additional pay.
Wages should be paid for what someone DOES. To do it correctly, they need to be educated. Educational unions have perverted the process for financial gain.
Don't feel bad, my profession is trying to do the same thing, we just have successfully blocked it so far, god help us if we ever lose that battle.

A question. 1.) Did she teach in the Streator school system? Now, GOD BLESS her, tell her to hang onto that job if she can. Because there isn't one out of a thousand like it today.

No, she didnt teach here.
And actually this is the 3rd job shes taken in the ~9 yrs since she left teaching. Always be on the search for improving yourself. And always leave in good standing. Rules to live by. They open doors of opportunity.

Teachers didn't decide on or set up the source of funding for their profession.
b. School boards disagree with you about this and this.
c. You are as clueless as to what K-12 teachers do for a living as any of them would be about what you do for a living. Your opinion is next to worthless.
