Yup, they robbed Peter to pay Paul. Pretty soon, if that continues Peter will get pretty pi$$ed at Paul. Like another member mentioned, the water got even murkier since they have sold off the lottery. It is and has been run by a 'privatized company'. I really don't get it. Chicago sold the parking meter business. They sold one of the toll roads too.(or long term lease) Our schools(some of them) have outsourced cafeteria services while going to a closed campus. Woodland, at one time owned a good fleet of buses, they outsourced that too. Some smooth talker convinced them they would be better off leasing. You can't tell me $omeone I$n't benefiting(financially) from being well connected to $ome deci$ion maker$. Unfortunately BD ^^^^................ I think that you just summed that all up in a BIGA$$ nutshell. So, the question though here now is................ WTH can WE do about it? And, now whilst I am like totally and completely disgusted, and yes PO'ed.......... WHY do they force these little kids, every school from Kindergarten on UP to sell CRAP to RAISE FUNDS for their school! HELLO............. I am a parent and a grand parent, and I have a very hard time with the soliciting of crap that REALLY do they expect children to go out and solicit for fundraisers, when in today's society, yeah that's real smart to subject children to go "door to door".............. HUH? When did education get thrown to the wayside with our school system?` The ONLY thing that I do remember selling for any fundraiser as a child was Girl Scout cookies, never ever did I ever sell anything to benefit my so-called school! Because for the most part, responsible parents just end up taking their kids newest "fundraiser" scheme to their workplace and take orders from their co-workers. Used to be not to many years ago, and some today.... that some responsible parents would actually walk door to door with their kids to pedal the newest fundraiser items.................. BUT I have had little kids come to our door ALONE to sell this CRAP, c'mon!!! This just scares me to no end. This next whole generation does too as well...for which I fear for, and shutter at the thought. M

The lottery money goes to education. What the state did was divert the money they had been putting towards education and put it somewhere else. The lottery replaced money not put in addition to. What has caused the most problems for school districts is the state giving districts less money for general state aid. If the state would find our district instead of at 87% we would have a balanced budget as would most other districts. We lose about a million and a half dollars per year as a result, Ok, so now I am yet more confused then. The State put the lottery money where exactly, and really how much money over the years and years of the lottery being in high swing has it ALL gone to then? I mean seriously HOW much money here are we even talking about, and who can actually prove WHERE it went? All I hear of are schools closing or begging for more funds, yet aren't receiving, WHY not? So then who in fact are padding their own pockets? M We have been giving the foreign countries a lot of money, more so than ever, that is why they have it perhaps better than us, excluding a few of them.

Just for fun, break it down for us...that is, your salary schedule for teachers and administrators and the cost per student to provide our Streator Polar Pop-ulation with a world class education. Remember, this is 2014, not 1974...and remember, you're actually going to have to find people to work for your compensation package. Remember, this is 2014, not 1974...and remember, you're actually going to have to find people to work for your compensation package. Easy, either drop the salary and keep the retirement, or keep the salary and make the Educator pay for their own retirement. Simple enough, but you don't want to hear that. BTW, world class education? Have you seen the education provided our kids? You forgot this part: Remember, this is 2014, not 1974...and remember, you're actually going to have to find people to work for your compensation package.

$30-35k starting salary, no step increase on a salary schedule, raise when times are good and the district has money, insurance with about 30% per month contribution with a $1,000 deductible. 401k retirement plan with matching contribution from district. You forgot this part: Remember, this is 2014, not 1974...and remember, you're actually going to have to find people to work for your compensation package.

Well lets see what you think is appropriate for 2014. No cuts, certainly. That's nuts. These are college graduates entrusted with the education of our children. My understanding is that for quite some time the level of talented teachers has been tumbling due to the difficulty of the job and the fact that teachers have become the "whipping boy" for a disintegrating society. Now...your solution is to compensate these people and future job applicants at a much lower level than they are currently receiving. How the hell is that going to attract talented people into teaching in our Streator Polar Pop-ulated schools...which are currently overflowing with disinterested students and increasing demands on our educators?

A VERY good proposal, in line with what the private sector has, this would go a long ways to bringing the education system to equilibrium. I would add one other thing, if you wish to further your education after your Associates, the taxpayers don't really mind helping you, but we should not raise the salary just because you chose to over-educate yourself. Kind of facetious, but it would be like the McDonalds burger flipper getting his Doctorate and demanding more money.

So pray tell HOW they could just automatically set up a "lottery" to generate revenue for the schools and highways...then just up and use it somewhere else.........are you SERIOUS? So, what it then boils down to is that that whole promotion of the lottery was nothing more then a big farce! Yet more (politician's) pockets got padded, more raises, etc? Schools that in fact were suffering terribly before this began are now WORSE off then ........ BECAUSE of, that's an oxymoron if I ever heard of one. Not to mention the roads.............. WTH !!!! This ALL is just sickening! M The easy solution involves a couple thousand gallons of hot tar, a truckload or two of feathers, and a trip to Springfield. Yea, it is sickening, hopefully more peoples eyes are being opened.

If it is hard, it is only because of the built in barriers placed by the system, because I can LOAD that school up with GOOD employees who could teach the lessons better than what we have.

Butters, have you actually been outside the Ivory Towers? Trust me, we can get GOOD teachers for what FOT proposes.

Starting salary is in the range I stated. I notice you said no cuts but failed to give any specifics. What would you propose Butterbean?

I'm the same way MM, I don't hate teachers, I would love to teach at the HS ( grade school would bore me ), and having kids there, and talking with them and their friends, I don't believe the problem is as much with the kids as it is with the system.
I seem to be able to get them to engage and think, granted my kids don't run with the worst of the body, but who knows if that is a genuine case of bad apples, or are they simply bored and not taken to following simply because they are told to.
After all, we all know Americans are born to follow what a faceless bureaucrat says we must...............
Perhaps it is as much some teachers who don't know how to get inside heads as it is bad heads attending the school.

If the money situation continues to deteriorate, deep cuts in the local teacher’s compensation package will be impossible to avoid. The almost total disrespect for those in this profession and the lack of knowledge by non-practitioners concerning the know-how, complexity, and volume of skillsets needed for what they do for a living is really quite evident in many of the posts. So, sniper can replace all of the teachers in Streator with better ones at much reduced compensation packages, huh? Well, I know dozens of teacher now and have known hundreds over the years…you don’t know squat, snipe.
