I have no issues with the way things were, but now people making 6 figures don't have to pay for their kids lunch, so my tax dollars are feeding these kids while their parents make way more money then my family. But my kids go to Woodland and it costs us $400.00 for sign up fee's plus $2.25 a day for lunch. Nope, not feeling it. Streator High school the students there have to pay for their lunch, but of course, not the "government assistant" group of kids. But did you know that at least 14% of these students in Streator grade school and high school are displaced/homeless. That was according to a high school teacher that I talked to last school year. It could even be higher this year. Now those students may only end up eating what they receive for free from the school system. I do know that Blessing in a back pack hands out what they are able to grade school students but does not help with all kids that are displaced/homeless in the same family. But my question is, why did one school district in the same town receive a grant while at another school district did not receive a grant? I would think that the high school and even Woodland would of applied for a grant. Like me, I have high school students and a student in grade school. I have never heard of a grant for all students to receive free lunch before. How about having a grant for free meals during the summer months for these kids during the summer and on the weekends. Some of these kids only meal is what they receive at school. Which is not these students fault what the responsible adult are suppose to feed them. But at the same time, parents still can put money on a account for ale a cart. Which still shows which students are free lunch, when the student uses ale cart.

I would think that Woodland students, the high school, St. Micheals school, and Rhema school, should of receive a grant also. How many schools in LaSalle County, Livingston County, of even in the entire state of Illinois received a grant for the school district to have free meals? Does the staff at the elementary school receive a free meal, also? With this grant for free meals for the students, how much money is the school district saving and be able to use for the students? With the grant for free meal, I would think it is saving the district money. That money could bring back the Homec teacher or the art teacher back for this year.

This is a federal grant awarded to districts with high poverty levels. We are at or near 75%. We did not have to apply like most grants. The other schools you mention don't qualify. There may not be a savings to the district but there will be to the families who have always paid for lunch and breakfast. Most years the district breaks even or makes a minimal profit from the food program. This grant pays for the students to eat not for all the supplies. If it doesn't work out and isn't what it was presented to the district to be we can opt out after a year. Otherwise the duration is a max of 4 years.

I understand that we have a high rate of poverty but it is not just at Streator grade level. It is at the Streator High school level also. So I do not understand why they would not qualify. So what is the difference between Streator grade School to Streator High school? I do not mean to sound like I'm disagreeing. But a lot of the poverty level kids that are in grade school have brothers and sisters in high school. So I would think that this federal grant program would look at the whole picture. Or was it that the Grade school level just applied for the grant. And how did the school district find this grant? I know that some of the parents, that make 6 figures, are offended. but I also think they should be thankful that they are saving over $400 per school year. That money could be used on clothes or put in a savings account.

With being near 75% of poverty level just at grade school level. What is the percentage level of that is considered displaced/homeless? I know that percentage is higher compared to a year ago. And I know that is not just at the grade school level. A lot of those grade school students have peers that are in high school. How many school district throughout La Salle county and in Illinois received this grant?

Yes Blessings does include the siblings in the family as long as the school tells us there are siblings. We don't know names of kids, we are only told how many bags to send. The schools know that if a child in one school has siblings at home or siblings in another school, include them in the number of bags. If you know of a child that is receiving a Blessings bag but the siblings aren't, either contact me or the principal of that school and the amount of bags will be adjusted. If a child in a grade school is getting Blessings and has a sibling in high school, please again let us know. We will send that student home with a bag for his sibling. We don't send what we can, we have a set menu that we use to purchase the food and to pack in the bags each week. We run solely on donations and last year we served over 180 children each weekend in 5 Streator area schools. The poverty level in Streator is over 60%. We would like to serve the high school too because we have heard there is need for it there. I'm in hopes the principal will accept us. I am glad the kids get free lunch now. I wish this extended to the high school too. I for one am sick of hearing stories of kids getting their trays ripped from their hands because they are short in their lunch account.....some just a buck or two short! These kids are the future of America. They can't learn if they are hungry. There is no reason to deny a child food. None. Thanks for bringing up Blessings capncrunch. Hope clarifying this will help reach more students.

Thank you for that information. I did not know that. I will send you the child I know of from last year that Northlawn knows that there are two other siblings in the house besides the one at Northlawn.

Has there been any complaints about not enough time to eat at the high school level? My son has stated something about not having time to eat and have talked to two other parents that stated the same thing.

My son has stated something about not having time to eat and have talked to two other parents that stated the same thing. Boy said the same thing, by the time you got thru the line, lunch was over. He started carrying his lunch in at least until they get their collective poop together. He also said prices were ignorant.
