I was at the gas station today and the pajama pants wearing trash in front of me bought two gallons of milk and four polar pops with the link card then in turn paid for four phillie blunt cigars two packs of newports and $40 in scratch off lottery tickets with a $100 bill out of her pocket and dropped another $100 bill on the floor when she pulled it out. Ha! are you serious? God i love paying for those wastes of good breathing air!

Making bad choices in life gets you rewarded. What gets me, it's a long and costly process to adopt a child to give them a good home. But any redneck can pop out one, and we have to pay for it. If you get married and have kids....no free polar pops for you. If you get knocked up, stay single and don't work.....free money. What a country!!

Well folks, we get the government we deserve. Not enough of the voting demographic are so inclined or willing to raise hell and/or do anything about this kind of stuff to the people who are in position to change it. Governmental give away programs are the third rail of elected officials. If you aren't for these programs then you're a heartless SOB who can be ridiculed to the point that many can't be re-elected and that is job one of elected officials.
Although I fully sympathize with the OP, those of us, me included, don't do enough of what it takes to cajole our elected officials to make the changes that are necessary. To eliminate the incentives to drop 2 or 3 kids without benefit of marriage or even a father in the child's life.
Frightening thing is, it's gonna' get a lot worse before it ever gets better!

I referenced this thread while in conversation with a PhD who's spent years researching the circumstances and needs of the so called "underserved populations". And the Dr.commented that in the state where a majority of the research they had conducted, was done, it is required that anyone receiving support, must do some sort of work in order to qualify for the help. Sometimes it's actual work, other times it's a volunteer service, but effort is required to gain the help needed. When interviewing one of the "needy" single parents the interview-ee told this researcher that, she felt it was very wrong that she should be required to work, becasue "I want to be a good Mother and stay at home with my children." This rather verbose researcher, was at a loss for words at that statement. But, it is a good example of how out of touch with reality a great many of those who live off of the system really are. The basic concepts of personal responsibility have been lost to many.

Fyi: link card benefits are being reduced starting tomorrow. Then onto cutting more link benefits to reduce the budget. Right now with a family of four, they will lose $36.00. And when they do further cuts in the near future,it would be pointless to even get a link card. Can't live on less than a $100.00 a month. Also been hearing some talk that congress may also look at possibly ending food stamps altogether. Oh my god, what will everyone do? 2 things I can think of would be starve to death or a rise on shoplifting food. I can see armed guards at walmart and krogers to make sure no one walks out with food.

Go out to Kroger some night between 11pm-4am (since they don't have to work) and the link people are easy to spot, pajama pants, full bascart of food (lots of name brand soda and meat-steaks etc..) kids running around screaming and crying(school nights of course) than when the cart is good and full they tell the u-scan checker to open a lane. And the people paying cash can go and check themselves out at the u-scan. Around 5am the working people start coming in.. I agree with the "theactualtruth" Ive seen that at gas stations around town lots of times, while we pay for them to sit home. Illinois has lost control. I wish the shut down in the government would have lasted a lot longer. What would they do without that link card for free food? work maybe? get a job? no they get more $$ to stay home and make kids. Have you heard that now some on link will sell you $100.00 link for $50.00 cash. That's when there is 2-3 women together or 2-3 guys together, sneak up and take a listen.. Sad

Amen! MM. In 1981 I'd managed to develop some credit card debt, we had my elderly Mother requiring a great deal of assistance, and she lived half an hour from us, we had two children in parochial school, and we weren't members of the denomination, and boom!! Mr.R. was laid off again. Scary time, we had music lessons and instruments to pay for, little league to cover, and just the day to day costs of living, plus all of the gas for me to go to and from my Mother. A few pound's of margarine, a big box of powdered milk, a box of salt, one of baking powder, 10#'s of flour, 5#'s of sugar and I can keep a family of four fed for quite a while. Flapjacks and home made simple syrup for breakfast, biscuits and gravy for super, and fried left over biscuits for lunch, with a little sugar and cinammon (left over from before we were out of cash). Sprinkled in would be some eggs here and there, and whatever green food was the cheapest in the freezer section, and on really good days there was some cheese. Water is good, and my children both drink it regularly even today. And frothy powdered milk, was a special treat, before froth makers were available we enjoyed it. My point is, truly people have forgotten HOW to survive, and they need to learn. And as MM said even now many, if not most, of us DO NOT eat what we want at every meal, every day. There is something to be said for delayed gratification, and using resources to support other options. And I love the last line of MM's response! "When you get a better job, and no longer need government assistance, then you can maybe get more of what you WANT."

I agree with some of this but some I don't as some people work and get link because of income not being enough. I know a family they both work but income figures in so they get some help. Just because people have link does not mean they don't work.

Indeed, many of those on the system work, but often they work jobs they "prefer" over something that is more demanding and difficult, simply because we (the state of IL) will cover for them. The problem that many of us are referencing, is due to the families that many of us know personally, who have many fine amenities, due to the rest of us in IL providing insurance for all of their children, and high-risk chosen pregnancies, along with WIC. Listening to how expensive a single bottle of formula for their sick child is "this formula is $9.oo a bottle, but 'cause of WIC we don't have to pay that." Just before they go out side for a smoke, and then proceed to tell us how the company gives them perks that don't show up in their pay, allowing them to get by without paying "extra tax". And keeping them in a bracket that allows them to remain on the system. I've been watching it for years. If you can't insure your children, shouldn't you be finding a cheaper way to live, and an extra job instead of letting the rest of us cover the gap. Most of us here, have seen hard times, and know what it takes to do what is responsible. If someone is in need, I believe Streator-ites are some of the most generous people I've encountered, we always dole out our money, but we're not stupid and those who see the system as a way to have what they want, while the rest of us pay for it, is unacceptable to some.
