Fyi: link card benefits are being reduced starting tomorrow. Then onto cutting more link benefits to reduce the budget. Right now with a family of four, they will lose $36.00. And when they do further cuts in the near future,it would be pointless to even get a link card. Can't live on less than a $100.00 a month. Also been hearing some talk that congress may also look at possibly ending food stamps altogether. Oh my god, what will everyone do? 2 things I can think of would be starve to death or a rise on shoplifting food. I can see armed guards at walmart and krogers to make sure no one walks out with food. I am not making this post about you Rocket, just in general for those on Link that may feel oppressed about cutbacks. Since when was a Link card supposed to be the sole means of support? I thought it was supposed to supplement the food of 'families that qualify'. $100 in free food can still go a long ways in rice, beans, flour, sugar, potatoes. You know, building blocks for making inexpensive MEALS that you COOK. I know, I know, it doesn't buy a months worth of T-bones......too bad. Suck it up! I don't think I would be quite as generous as the Link card folks. If I were Czar, there would be bags of rice, beans, flour, potatoes and other items that could go a long ways. Soups are hearty and inexpensive.(and no not just the ones from Campbell's) Mac and Cheese, Chilli Mac, Biscuits and Gravy, Pork and Beans over Cornbread is not too bad, there are lots of ways you can make a variety of inexpensive and nutritious foods. It may not be exactly what you want, but it fills the hole in the stomach pretty good. When you get a better job, and no longer need government assistance, then you can maybe get more of what you WANT. Newsflash! Many of us don't get exactly what we WANT every meal of every day..... Hey now, I resemble your remarks here, as I do cook alot, lol. What I do find so ironic is that ALL of these people sure do know and learn quickly ALL the ropes regarding ALL of the programs available and at their / OUR disposal. How? Other then it's generation upon generation of swift teaching on how to totally "screw the system". Pffftttt! So........what happened to the government rationed cheese blocks, AND also I do think peanut butter, rice, etc.? Now it's just so simplified for "these" people to buy really what they want or I have heard that they sell their $$ off of their cards? And...if I'm not mistaken didn't the government rule out/ or limit the number of children that they do cover per these programs? I know that it used to be that the more children that they had and able to "pop" out that would amount to of course more $$? I DO get the sad reality fact that many people do fall into financial circumstances and hard times because of, in which I do sympathize with...but c'mon................. this milking the system has got to stop! WTH.......... our gracious government not only gives them cards to buy what so ever, but they will also provide them with FREE cell phones too as well. Excuse me...but the last I knew a cell phone WAS a luxury, and no one pays mine, but me! Ugh.......... M

Funding cut for food assistance program in Illinois mywebtimes.com/archives/ottawa/display.php?id=483991A temporary increase in federal food aid spending is set to expire in November, meaning those receiving food stamps will see a decrease in benefits. The changes are due to the expiration of a funding increase to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program the federal government put in place in 2009."This is a result of federal funding cuts and not something the state did," said Illinois Department of Human Services spokeswoman Januari Smith.SNAP is the federal food assistance program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the USDA website, the 2009 increase was intended to help people affected by the recession.Emmanuel Colon, an Ottawa resident who uses SNAP benefits via his Illinois LINK Card, is worried the cuts are "just the tip of the iceberg.""First they take off $20 then next it will be $100," Colon, 33, told The Times. "This is just the start. Twenty dollars will not be the end of it."Congress is in negotiations over a five-year farm bill, with one of the main points of contention being cuts to SNAP. A bill that passed in the U.S. Senate, but not the House, includes a $4.5 billion cut to the program spread out over 10 years. A bill in the House includes a $39 billion cut to the program over the same time period. The House bill would cut costs, in part, by limiting benefits for childless adults to three months within a three-year period unless they work more than 20 hours per week or enroll in a job training program. The decreases that will be seen in November, however, are not due to direct cuts, but rather allowing the expiration of a temporary increase passed in 2009 as part of an economic stimulus package.Colon is unemployed and lives with his wife, Christy, who is on disability. Beginning in November, a two-person household could receive $20 less each month compared to October, depending on individual circumstances.Colon is upset he was not warned the decrease was coming."People like us that need this are going to be suffering and we find out at the last minute," he said. "They don't call or send letters, nothing."An IDHS press release issued Oct. 28 said, "IDHS informed SNAP recipients of the changes by distributing fliers at local offices and placing notices on its automated helpline, website and social media pages."As of September, 21,985 people in 10,028 households were part of SNAP in La Salle and Grundy counties. The local IDHS office covers both counties, so there is no separate data available. In Illinois, more than 2 million people receive SNAP benefits. How will benefits change? It is difficult to say how much of a decrease families will see if the 2009 SNAP increases expire as scheduled, since benefits depend on many factors. However, an IDHS press release said those receiving maximum benefits will see the following decreases beginning in November: One-person household: $11. Two-person household: $20. Three-person household: $29. Four-person household: $36.For information on how changes will affect you, call the number on the back of your LINK card or the IDHS automated help line at 800-843-6154

Doesn't sound like anyone will be sitting on their asses anymore if they want link. They will have to work in return to receive it.

The Link system is totally broken. It is filled with rampant abuse. I wonder if the ones complaining about change or ranting and raving at the suggestion of getting a job are not in fact some of the abusers of the system.Living within your means is a concept which Link has removed from the mentality of many getting Link. The system is broken and needs a major overhaul. Link has created a sense of entitlement among a good portion of society.

I think we're dealing with a senate bill and a house bill here.. So nothing is finalized until they can sit down together and come up with a bill they both agree on....
But yes the temporary food stamp increase is set to expire............

Today would not be a good day to be grocery shopping. The rif-raf will be out and sponging up all of their entitlements. The spawn in school will also be taking home "Backpacks" of donated items. This will be good trading material for cigs and candy.

CityS. You can relax about the "backpacks" issue, as I feel very certain that none of your revenues supplied them. If there was less "FORCED by taxation charity" going on in our nation, I'm convinced we would see our citizens helping the needy in real substantive ways, such as this charity does. Then the concept of accountability & honest expectations would help to dimenish &eliminate the abuses we have seen going on for too long in our country. Some kind & devoted people provide this backpack effort to help the innocents & I applaude their good work!

What happened to first comes love, second comes marriage, third comes so-and-so pushing a baby carriage. My husband and I had health insurance when our first born son was born. It did not cover maternity. I believe we didn't have that little boy paid off for many years but we did finally "own" him outright one day. lol Now, it seems that the family planning is to have your children before you are married so the state can pay for it. Once you've had all of the kids you then get married. Not cool.
The day a few weeks ago when Link was down, I went shopping at Kroger. I have to say that was the most pleasant shopping experience I've had there in a long time.

I know a girl who is living with a guy they have one child now and live in a house they pay rent at and she gets link because she is a single mom. Well they decided to have a 2nd child so they can move into the housing project and not have to pay rent and she will get more on link because of 2 kids. Sounds like a sweet way of life. This state is so sad!
