For our daughter's last day in Florida, we decided to take the dogs to a park with a river leading into the Gulf. We figured that the dogs would enjoy seeing an Manatee or two. What kind of dog is the white/tan one with the markings? Annie sure is growing up fast! She'll be a skilled traveler just like Callie was.

The white/tan dog? She is a rescue dog, found on the streets in some town in Oklahoma. No one knows her mix, but her coloring is very similar to the first dog I ever owned. That dog, actually more my brothers' dog, lived to be over 18 years old.
Annie has done quite a bit of traveling: Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. She has been swimming in five different states. While Callie made several trips to Streator, Annie hasn't made it there yet. Callie was even in a parade in Streator. She walked sedately along side of our calliope.

When I lived down there I had a permanent place staked out on the beach...... We would get there about 8 PM and spend the night, something very peaceful about the beach at 3 AM listening to the waves gently roll in. Until an alligator eats you in your sleep. You know the sad thing? We had to go actively looking for Gators other than the 1 6 footer who wandered up next to the shop in the drainage ditch ( he was delicious....) I think they wuz skeered of me......

Last year, there was a gator in the pond behind our house here. We haven't seen any in the pond this year. In the lake adjacent to the pond, they have pulled out six so far this year. All over Florida, people call the "gator-getters" to deal with gators. The procedure is interesting. They back a lift truck up to the gator. The lift has a long funnel on it with a rope inside the funnel attached to a winch inside. The gator getters lasso the gator and winch it into the funnel.

A good friend of ours tonight kept talking about the lobster tails he had last night, now that's all that I am thinking about having, lol!!! He is a butcher at Kroger's and they have lobster tails on special for $5 a tail. Granted they are small ones, but still though......... *mouth watering* M

Now that is acceptable...but, have you seen on TV these gator hunters who just dive in the mucky water and wrestle them to catch?...Those guys must have a death wish, or are just plain stupid!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo thank you!!!!! M

Last week, we went to a presentation on alligators hosted by the local Audubon Society. The presenter, a professor at the University of Florida, is a nationally prominent expert on alligators. During his talk, he showed a film clip of him swimming with alligators while he was completing research for his PhD. Among the many facts about alligators that I found interesting were the following: 1. Contrary to common myth, alligators cannot run faster than people, 2. Alligators are found only in China and the United States and 3. South Florida is the only place in the world where crocs and alligators are both found. He talked a lot about Payne's Prairie, a local state park. He showed a couple of slides of the park showing at least a hundred alligators. The park is off of #75 south of Gainesville just out side of the quaint little town of Micanopy, the site of the movie Doc Hollywood. It will not be until April, however, before they come out in numbers.
