That is some cool footage. Mazon was a little before my time but I've heard stories of when Bob Tattersall, Jack Tyne and some others raced there.
It's hard to believe that there were 2 racetracks used for auto racing in Streator. The old Streator Speedway, also known as 3rd Street Speedway, and there was another track out on Oakley Ave. just west of Ligori's where the church is now. That speedway, according to the neighbors, only lasted a couple of seasons. Not much is known of the Oakley Ave. track. I'm not even aware of what it was called.
Bob Tattersall got his start at the old 3rd Street track. I believe Jack Tyne started out there, as well. My Dad spoke of many of the drivers who raced there. He knew several of them.
Fairbury American Legion Speedway and Peoria Speedway are about the only dirt tracks that have survived throughout the decades. Even La Salle has fallen on some hard times of late. Hope La Salle doesn't disappear. Mazon and later Morris is still around but I've never really been all that much of a fan of asphalt short track racing. Just not my preference.
Peoria Speedway is located on West Farmington Rd. and has been there since relocating there in 1965. Prior to the opening of the Farmington Rd. location Peoria Speedway was located in the Mt. Hawley area of Peoria near Detweiller Park. In addition to stories of the old 3rd Street Speedway in Streator my Dad also spoke of attending stock car races at the old Mt. Hawley location, and of course he regularly went to races at the Farmington Rd. location in later years. I've had the pleasure of attending events at the present location many times over the years, as well.

Yeah all I remember was cars would disappear on turn three and drive back on the track. My parents were big into midget racing.

Wgen Lasalle opened it forced Fairbury to get rid of the dog leg it had by the pit entrance and do some other mods.. Lasalle had some good racing in the beginning I don't find it that competitive anymore.Peoria is good at times but the dirt just hangs in the air and falls on you down in the bottoms there.

The Illini 100 at Farmer City has been plagued with weather problems since it's inception several years ago. It's an iffy proposition to schedule racing in early April. Been to FCR many times over the years. The facility is antiquated and not in very good shape but the track itself provides very good racing. For this years' Illini 100, in addition to the late models, they added a national midget car division to the show. This midget division brand new this season and is owned and managed by the same people who own and manage the WoO's Sprint Car division and the WoO's late model division. The Illini 100 event was to be the midget division's first ever event. FCR had over 35 midgets pre-entered and it was shaping up to be a great show for the small cars. Some very good midget drivers were expected to be at FCR.
Jacksonville, IL is a bit of a drive but the track there, which is part of the Morgan County Fairgrounds, is without question one of the best run dirt racing facilities in the Midwest. The track is very racy, as well. The guy that promotes J-ville is a great guy and runs a very, very good schedule year in, year out. We hope to make it down there at least a couple of times this season.

Looks pretty chilly for the Fairbury grand finale next weekend. I’ve sat in Lake Geneva with snow flurries in the past before they closed so I can handle it...
