SOS, according to a couple of WW2 vets & my cousin by marriage, a Vietnam vet, it is what my Aunt in law & Mother in law called creamed, chipped beef on toast. I may be way off on this, but it has been a term that I've only heard from military men. (I can't eat it, way too high in sodium, but 40 years ago I sure enjoyed what my in laws prepared.-)

I used to fix it many years back. My dad wouldn't touch it because of eating it in the service.

Not knocking the mess cooks or the food they prepare, but cookin for the masses is a bit different than cookin for your family. Had some good friends while I served that were cooks....good people to know in the service. ....especially the night baker.

When we are at home, I stock up on it. I can't find it in any of the stores near us in Florida. My wife, who is a stickler for reading sodium content in foods, "approves" it. I have made SOS on my own a number of time, but the result is not as good as Dean's product.
