I am waiting for that little short guy to announce that the owner wants to retire because of "all those" people who use the streets near his business as a toilet. Gee, there certainly does seem to be a lot of interest in this subject. There has been a lot of talk about it, but it seems some people want to talk about it even more. Yes roman, if Ace does close rather than be sold if Bill does retire, then you will probsbly be hearing me claim that people being over-served to the point that so many are pulling their pants down, beating each other in the middle of the streets, and calling police threatening to kill everyone, which keeps people away from our downtown and doea hurt business is part of the reason. You aren't one of those who think that people should follow our City's lead with commercial buildings and just walk away from their investments here, are you? You do think that if he were going to retire and there is any kind of a market here, that he will find a buyer, don't you? If Ace relied on a lot of people bringing their families there in the evening, the illegal activities that are allowed to go on in our streets would probably be even more of a factor for them, but I do think that Streator's rough reputation that is sustantiated and perpetuated each time that another of the negative, illegal activities are allowed to happen does keep some people away from their store. I think that the source of the information should be taken into consideration. Personally, I really doubt that the rumor is anything more than some BS (similar to telling the govermment that they are disabled to collect benefits and then promoting a mechanic business), but thanks for requesting me to explain again how the negative, illegal, and increasing problems created by the bar owners hurts our entire community. Isn't it a shame that our City Council caved in to the bar owners and not only didn't support their new City Manager's solution, but didn't even provide any type of solution either? Should we just expect the problems to continue increasing and hurting more businesses here to see if we lose our hardware store like we lost our unique movie palace? Yes chevypower, roman's post was pretty funny, wasn't it?

Best ACE I have ever been too. I hope this isn't true. Right! Have you ever been in there when it wasn't fully staffed? There's always someone in every section, to help you.

Yes chevypower, roman's post was pretty funny, wasn't it? Kyle Bentham's philosophy on downtown streator! Yes, and what is your position on the issue? Don't you think that since there are absolutely reasons that our society has created the laws that we have, that they should be enforced so that we can have things like an open movie palace? It didn't seem to make the greatest number of people the happiest to support the place by attending movies around the excessive bar problems, did it? Do you think that it creates the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people to buy bagged yard products that have been urinated on? Isn't it a shame that our City leaders caved in to show their support for the bar owners to keep doing things as they always have and didn't support their new City Manager's request, or present any solution of their own? Are they just going to wait until even more people don't find the greatest happiness being around the "increasing" bar problems and go to other communities instead of supporting our local hardware store?

Talked to a elderly lady, yesterday. She was telling me that Ace Hardware is closing due to owner is retiring and his kids don't want to take over. Is there any truth to that? Did you ask the elderly lady where she got her information? I doubt that store is closing.

Ace is a great store. Locally owned, great knowledgeable and helpful staff, centrally located in town and usually competitively priced. I really can't imagine why they would up and close and not at least sell to someone that wanted to continue the business. Rumor doesn't make sense. I like Ace and go there a lot. As many have said, when you need something and you want it now, Ace usually has it. And I will also add that along with my many, many visits to Ace, I have also gone to the Majestic many times since they were offering first run movies....and not once, not one time have I ever witnessed anyone relieving themselves in the street, alley or sidewalk. Back to Ace, the one major obstacle I see in anyone buying Ace is the cost of purchasing an up and running business. If you think about the building cost, the taxes, the cost of the inventory, the cost of experienced knowledgeable help, maintenance and being competitive....you are talking a staggering amount of money, work, time, headaches etc. I could really understand Bill wanting to get out of it himself, but finding someone to actually shell out the money to buy it and keep it going to the standards that Bill has set is a going to be a tough nut to crack. That in itself may be one good reason to keep the doors open and keep working...Right Bill? You know how it is MM to open a business and make a go of it...it ain't easy, is it?

I totally agree maskedman, but that didn't stop roman from using the rumor to try to make it seem as if it is acceptable for people to use our streets as a toilet and ridicule me for asking for better for our community. It seems that some people really want to make others believe that urinating in public or any of the other negative and illegal activities are acceptable and just part of the culture of Streator. I have met too many good people in Streator to believe that it is either acceptable or part of our heritage. I hope that our City leaders start providing better enforcement of our laws so that more people might feel comfortable that they wouldn't have to worry about these problems that do happen in the day time too (video and photos verify) when they support our local businesses.

Its sad that it has come to more or less a mocking of Kyle whenever topics come up. Dont you feel proud Kyle that more and more people have turned to mocking you, instead of addressing the problems you present? This is why I have been suggesting to you that you try a different approach. Addressing the issues on SO doesnt seem to really be working for you. You were so happy that after all these pages, the city was going to address the issue about bar problems, but now that appears to not be happening. Back to the subject of Ace. I will ask Mr Stone, the next time I see him.

That is why those businesses need every last bit of business they can get. Even just some people not wanting to go to the area because our laws are allowed to be broken without any consequences, creating "increasing" numbers of the incidents, can really hurt a business.

I have bought numerous of things from Streator's Ace, just like others here in town and would surely hate to see this store to close. But, I also did not bring up the subject, just so someone could get Mr. Mitchell going on how public urinating has effected Streator's businesses.
