Can any of you teacher-haters out there explain to me how a teacher can be judged fairly from student scores?
It seems to me that a teacher can control the delivery of information, but not it's reception, acceptance, or the ability and motivation to comprehend the material by students.
Please don't compare classrooms to factory floors or sales figures...it's NOT the same dynamic or situation.
Many, many students seem to be socially promoted without learning the requisite skills and informational sets provided for in the curriculums for each grade level. Middle school classrooms consist of students having no idea of simple math facts and most can't tell you who our first president was, let alone write a simple sentence.
What the hell has been going on the past 40 years or so in education?

Why do you complain so much and make excuses? What do you know about factory floors or getting production out? Anyone can make excuses. The sun was in my eyes. The wind took it. There's a hole in my glove. At the end of the day you have to catch the ball and make the play because that's what we all have to do to keep the boss happy and put meat on the table, the lights on at home, and keep our wheels turning. I agree that our Educational system is messed up and probably has been for a long time. I agree many young people are not 'receptive to learning' and maybe common core is not a good idea. Why don't we just throw more money at it? That will certainly fix it, won't it?
Why do you complain so much and make excuses? I’m addressing critical concerns and you’re taking a shot at me…true? What do you know about factory floors or getting production out? Your assumptions about what I know or don’t know are meaningless on this anonymous forum.
Anyone can make excuses. The sun was in my eyes. The wind took it. There's a hole in my glove. The sky is blue, the grass is green…what does your digression have to do with the points I make? Say it out loud.
At the end of the day you have to catch the ball and make the play because that's what we all have to do to keep the boss happy and put meat on the table, the lights on at home, and keep our wheels turning. Your point as it pertains to my post? Say it out loud.

Why don't we just throw more money at it? That will certainly fix it, won't it? Your basic complaint voiced once again, having nothing to do with the topic.
Try again, Masked Man? Don't run away.

Judging a teacher off of test scores in current times is nonsense. With NCLB expecting all children to meet/exceed and raising the bar each year is absurd. Special needs students are tested at grade level instead of ability level. Expecting every single student to achieve the same ability is a pipe dream but the teacher is blamed if it isn't. How many of us so called experts could pass the new standards test at the 6,7 grade level?
I would judge a teacher by the improvement of each student during the year and those dtudents who are at the bottom and don't improve should be held back a year.

Why are the teacher unions NOT fighting tooth-and-nail to stop it and why are the rank and file teachers NOT demanding that their union bosses reject the very idea of it? I understand from articles and blogs that the unions just bent over and spread for this idiocy.

(This is from 2012.)
I don't think teachers have a friggin clue as to what their union bosses are REALLY up to.
Cutting deals to maintain power, position, and money is as old as Cain and Abel and the union stooges don't EVEN try to hide it...'cause they can't.

By the way...attention all teachers who voted for Obama:
His administration is ALL FOR the use of student test scores to be used in evaluating teachers, particularly the Common Core nightmare tests.

You could take the best teachers in the state and place them in a ghetto school, but the kids' scores would not suddenly jump up to a higher level. Similarly, you could put some of the worst teachers in the state and place them in an affluent suburban school; the kids' scores would not suddenly plummet.
Judging teachers by test scores ignores any number of important indicators of academic success: the number of books in the students' homes, the students' diet, the educational level of the students' parents, and the degree of support of education in the kids' homes.

I think job has some good points here.. I know I knew my address and could read and write before starting kindergarten. Think the liberalization of America and the promotion of single parent families could be at fault here also..

TODAY, We as Adults With / Without children KNOW what it's like to start our days, weeks, months, years out with; CHILDREN who for The NORM IS;
Lack of self respect
Lack of morals
Lack of discipline
Lack of self discipline
Lack of motivation
Lack of proper nutritions
Lack of sleep
Lack of proper Stimulation / Over Stimulation (electronics)
Lack of clean environment (tobacco, dust mites, allergens, )
Lack of Stress relief skills
Lack of medical care
This was NOT......THE WAY of a Struggling post war "Traditional Family" of the 50's - 60's. NOTHING was purchased on Credit nor taken for granted. We were SPANKED and our Mouths WERE Washed out with SOAP. There Were CONSEQUENCES ! ! !
Do I believe Teachers are Challenged DAILY with children LACKING LIFE SKILLS which should be The RESPONSIBILITIES from home; Y E S ! I came from a household of 5; 2 parents, 3 children. I CAN NOT imagine starting my full day with disciplinary issues consisting of 1 on 14 (?). Do our Teachers ask for ALL of these issues going into the profession they choose, do they not anticipate facing these issues, Should they EXPECT these issues with a percentage of these issues along with their Salary?

Don't they call it social promotion? I have heard our school system has promoted kids, NOT knowing the lessons of that certain grade.

Golly, how did we ever make it through school back in the day?
I mean, we had EVERYTHING that the kids today don't
Our parents didn't smoke or drink around us............
We had Warm homes in the Winter and Cool homes in the Summer..........
All of us had 3 squares a day with proper nutritional value............
None of us ever ran without proper sleep ( you now, the cool home in the Summer thing ).........
None of us ever worked while in school...................
None of us ever lacked world class health care.............
NOT.
What we didn't have was any friggin excuse.
If you were a dummy you KNEW you were toast.
Today, you just go on the Government program.

I know PLENTY of "dummies" who were terrible at schoolwork, but retired with HUGE pensions from places like CAT. Those jobs don't exist anymore...and they aren't coming back.

Although people in town today regard the 40s and 50s as Streator's salad days, the opportunity for well-paying factory jobs caused a large number of kids to drop out of school when they were 16. In those days, factories hired kids at 16; the law changed sometime in the 60s when employees were supposed to be 18 if they worked in any factory job involving hazardous work. It was difficult in the 40s and 50s to convince kids o to study hard so that they could go to college. The only college graduates most kids knew in those days were teachers, doctors, lawyers or clergymen; and most kids did not want to be teachers or clergymen. Very few kids ever knew any lawyers, but knew that it required 7 years of college education. Although almost every kid knew a doctor, most kids knew that becoming a doctor took even more years than it took to become a lawyer.

The whole world didn't grow up in a factory town like Streator. We had precious few factories in my home town. There wasn't a nanny government to carry you if you were a slacker.
