My last game at SHS was also the last game SHS played in the Big Twelve, the top down-state conference. We played Bloomington, a school twice the size of SHS; we won by three touchdowns. The following year, in a new conference, SHS had its only undefeated team. Four guys from that team went on to play college ball.
The coaches in those days were George Ashworth and Ralph Ganzer; both men had played college ball. Both men were respected, but neither man was anything like the fuzzy, warm type coach that people in Streator seem to want today: "We don't care if you win, just be nice to the boys."
SHS' football has become a joke over the years. The long standing excuse for SHS's sorry record for years has been: " We are playing bigger schools." That excuse is no longer available.
The town has changed. Perhaps it is a good change, but someone from my era does not believe that putting up with losing seasons year after year is a good thing.

The soccer team has had winning seasons, for several years, football seems to be the thing, in what most are interested. Too bad, the soccer team, does not get the recognition it deserves. Shoot, they were sharing their field w/ the band at one time.

Shoot, they were sharing their field w/ the band at one time. That is a shame. Soccer is a great game. Other than a PE class in college, I never played the game. When our kids were young, we took a trip to London. Because my wife and kids went to bed early, I would stay up and watch soccer games. When we came back home, we started following the Chicago Sting, a one-time pro team in Chicago. We took our kids to see Pele when he came to town. Two of my grandsons play and both are pretty good. Because I never played the game, I miss a lot of subtle stuff.

Well at least the band requires use of the upper body. I am the first to admit I don't fully understand all the finer nuances with Soccer. I just can't get into a sport that doesn't allow you to use the upper body whatsoever and very little contact. Very little scoring and contests that end in a tie....sorry, just not my thing. More power to the Soccer Dawgs though, more power to them. Perhaps the winning ways will rub off on some of the other Varsity sports. It sounds like SHS football players have not used their "upper body" for many years: blocks, tackles, forearm shivers, stiff-arms, etc.

Have you seen guys, hit w/ their head and chest? And the stamina, it takes to run up and down the field w/ no time outs, no huddles for a quick breath, etc etc.Oh and time is put back on the clock, w/ injuries and loss of time and such. Last I learned the head and chest were the upper body. With the newfound stuff about head injuries in football, I bet we will see a decline in kids that play.

My little mom and I, used to go watch, when she was alive,.as her son was the coach, and I began, to learn. And, being the sister of a soccer coach, 2 neicettes, playing in the Peoria area, I am more into it, than ever. I may be biased, but it is a darn good game, now that I am getting, educated about it.

I was that way at first, too. No biggy. Some folks don't like curling, either. I like it.

Toshiko is correct, from my perspective, soccer is a physically demanding game, & fun to watch. Although there are injuries associated with the game, but most sports do present a degree of danger. I also love watching curling, our son & a couple of other young men we knew played on teams for a few years, what an unusual & fun sport, but like all competitions the chance for injury is real. I've listened to the coaches & watched the kids play football in Streator, at every level, for the last 12 years. And I watched most of the games front & center this year & despite Roman's opinion that our boys were playing warm & fuzzy football they were hitting hard & getting hit. Having also watched football played for many years while growing up, in anything but a warm & fuzzy era, I know that football is more than a brutes game!!! Coaching & smart play is a must for winning. I'm Always amused by old men & their recall of how much better they were than our young men are presently! Coahes are necessary for winning teams. Also there has to be a loser in every game thats played, thus learning to be a gentleman & a sportsman is an important aspect of any game. Is not the purpose of youth sporting events preparation for life?
