I guess the moral of the story is... All of you upset about it should have become teachers! I think it has more to do with promises we may not be able to keep.. I don't believe these pensions were originally guaranteed by the state...

And where will that leave your grandchildren? If something isn't turned around soon, none of the youth looking to be an example, and inspire young minds will be encouraged to be teachers.

Amazingly enough, there will still be very good teachers if the scale is brought back to sustainable levels....... The KEY is to get this country off the retail and service mentality and back to what brought her wealth, manufacturing.

It's the attitude toward teachers that I was referring to. People's disrespect toward them, and teaching their kids to disrespect them.

Ok, I will give you that, but it is far more than just disrespect for teachers, most parents don't require their children respect them, much less anyone else. I don't think they actively try and foster disrespect, most don't want to put in the effort to instill respect.

I can't say I was disrespecting anyone and I certainly do not teach my kids that either, let's face it, the teachers union is a mess and lot's of tax dollars go towards that union. Sugar coating, this is not going to make the situation better.

I guess the moral of the story is... All of you upset about it should have become teachers! Remember that next time the plumber charges you $200 for a job that should have taken 15 mins.........no....wait.......the plumber isn't paid by taxpayers is he??? Over paid is bad.......overpaid by the taxpayers IS very correctable...... I am not trying to pick on plumbers, just trying to illustrate a point. Do you actually think teachers are overpaid? In THIS town? What do you base this particular opinion on? Kids are getting out of college 70-100 thousand dollars in debt! Many with Masters and double-majors and go to work for 28-32 thousand a year to start...depending on where they teach!

Butters. YES, the top range is overpaid, the starting salary is a bit LOW. The retirement package is INSANE for all.
You bark about coming out of college in debt, but do not their peers in the private sector?
The difference is the Engineer doesn't get paid extra for the masters, the doctorate simply because they earned it.
I don't know where in the hell we got off track about teaching being rocket science, but it ISN'T.
Teaching isn't all that hard, trust me I did it.

I know a teacher & 6 years ago, when teaching at a very good university, where 85% of the students were motivated to be in the class, it was fun & "exhilirating". But when later coming to IL to teach in our junior college system, with a few advanced high school students & the regular Jr college enrollees "exhilirating" quickly became excruciating. The problems with education is in great part about problems in our society & what students & their families believe to be important for the future. The teacher, I mentioned, is thinking the choice to take on the huge job of getting advanced degrees & the debt, may not have been a good choice. And this person had the 1st degree paid for by parents & scholarships & fellowships to help with the advanced degrees.
