Looking forward to Spring: I have just been made aware of a local initiative to create a bike path loop in and around Streator. A retired Marine has been clearing sections of abandoned rail lines and is looking for easements on active ones, and would like to have 4" cinder base on them. Streator is a pretty bicycle-friendly town to begin with and I welcome this plan. (not exactly new, the city had a greenway plan in 2002 but it got shuffled under some papers or didn't have the funding) It would be good if we had something like the I & M towpath, really good if we could have an east-west bicycle passage on the north side shopping areas. (for schmucks like me who don't want to have to get in a car to shop)

I agree. I like this plan. Streator has never utilized our river areas. its time we do so. Maybe this will open up a few new businesses ..bicycle/kayak rentals?

In the original Greenway plan the idea was to make a path from the canoe launch around to the old trestle. A bridge across the river and then a path along the river to possibly Oakley Avenue. By the wastewater plant there would be another bridge to take the path to Spring Lake. The path would follow the railroad track bed there to the east heading over to the bottom of Sherman st and head east still between st Mary's and Flinks. From vermillion st it would follow diagonally towards both Bodznick field and south to James st. I don't know why it was never followed through with but it is something I brought up in the last 2 elections.

It would be NICE if The City Leaders would fix the ROADS and SIDEWALKS that are ALREADY IN PLACE.

troll is it keep up or just plain dont do it? Sorry for the confusion. Just plain don't do it. All They seem to want to do is MORE MORE MORE and NOT FIX what is BROKE around THIS Town. It seems The MOTTO is: Let's cover it up so possible NEWCOMERS or TRAVELERS won't see it till They have INVESTED THEIR LIFE SAVINGS into a Home or Business in Town.

This isn't the city taking the initiative, it is a private person. I suppose that would free the city up to do whatever it is they do. I have invested my "life savings" in this community (and what a vast fortune THAT is!) and I am not particularly bothered by the mush-mosh of concrete sidewalks, cobblestones, or lack of sidewalks, curbs, drains etc. Heck, I don't even have a sidewalk by my house and I don't care if you cut through my yard!
I like riding my bike around town already because, unlike many towns (particularly in the Chicago 'burbs), you can get around Streator by riding on side streets. With a few tweaks, this already good side street thing could be combined with the greenway/bike path idea and Streator would start looking quite attractive to bicyclists and young families.
I hope we weren't all waiting for an industrial savior to make Streator into...well, whatever it is we want...

With all the thugs in this town running around,i wouldn't go on any of these trails unless I am packing for protection. Or the pd agrees under contract with this owner to strongly police patrol the trails or put up more police cameras. Thugs love to hide in weeds ,brush, bushes or any other object big enough to hide behind until there victim comes by ,and then jump out and attack them.

Have you been attacked by thugs hiding in the bushes? The only thugs I've noticed are the ones on Kyle's thug-cam. As long as the bike paths don't run near the bars, we should be ok!

The big twin city south of here, has a bike and walking path. I have read of many muggings and assaults on it. These cities have many people using the trails and this still happens. PACK and be PROTECTED, words to be alive by.
