Tonight is the meeting where they will be raising property taxes. They also plan to authorize a contract to demolish four more houses.
People move away from Streator. Tax revenue decreases, so the tax rate rises and services drop. More people leave, houses don't sell, so taxpayers get to pay to demolish them. Tax rates go up more, and the cycle just keeps repeating.
Maybe we should start doing something differently.

High taxes,no jobs and a high crime rate is why people are leaving.

"High taxes,no jobs and a high crime rate is why people are leaving." And yet, there's a large contention of people in our town, who disdain the retirees who choose to move here. The retirees are able and willing to pay the taxes, spend their money in town, and they're not prone to commiting crimes, and they don't need jobs. This continually causes me to shake my head. Something is better than NOthing. Seems many have forgotten the adage of a bird in the hand.

Sorry, but your argument holds no merit...Why?...Because what happens when the "retirees" pass on?...Their $$$ goes with them... That being said, wouldn't it be much more beneficial to attract businesses that would employ the younger demographic?...The ones who have a longer life span, thus paying taxes longer...The ones that have families that will grow and either have a future in Streator, or move to another location where they have more opportunities... Seriously, I don't see anyone beating pavement to move here...In fact, all I've seen is the opposite... It isn't about "disdain" for anyone, it's about what is good for ALL of Streator...

Indeed, no1NP I have many "horses in the race" and a huge amount of interest in the future of Streator, and I agree that bringing business here would be wonderful for all of us. But, I disagree that my "argument holds no merit.". You are correct that retirees die, but when people are retiring at 50, as many in my generation have done, and they live to be 85 or so that's 30 years of small business exchanges, taxes for the city, and safe citizens for our neighbors. Also, retirees attract other retirees, and believe me the money that comes from larger towns in the way of their retirement benefits are not a laughing matter. So, you have a continuum of retirees that can afford decent homes, and are able to maintain them for a good long time, and as some of us die off, our "younger" friends are still here and hopefully attracting more future retirees to our fair city. My point was not that we should be happy to just exist for the hope of gaining retirees, my point was that considering our present circumstances the value of retirees is not something to be set aside and certainly shouldn't receive the disdain that I presently hear expressed in too many circles.

I'm just curious? What jobs in streator or around allow you to retire at age fifty?

EM, Consider yourself to be one of the lucky ones who was able to retire at 50 (If that's the case), because you're indeed the last generation that will be able to do so... I guess what irks me as a fairly new resident to Streator is just how difficult it is to gain decent employment anywhere in town...When it comes to Vactor, Owens, Lucky, etc... you'd better know somebody or you won't get hired... People gripe on here constantly about the plethora of unwed, young mothers in town who receive assistance, but what else can they do?..."IF" they managed to graduate, there are ZERO opportunities in town for them to take advantage of...Wal-Mart cannot employ them all, neither can the limited other places in town that offer employment to those just starting out...Results/Teleperformance are the local revolving doors that contain nothing but drama and false promises, and one of them is rumored to be leaving the country as it is... So what next?... I suggest that the city consider all options to bring steady, FULL TIME jobs here...That way, maybe some of the younger folks can, and will retire here...

Full times Jobs? Most places anymore only hire at part time at best due to insurance purposes. So you need two part time jobs in order to get a fourty hour week. to just make ends meet. And even if you get a job, chances are one of the part time job is located out side of Streator, then your spending money on gas.

I appreciate our retired citizens. However I think we would be better off with a more diverse community. Retirees typically do not spend near as much as younger people. If we had more jobs, people could raise their families with kids going off to college and then coming back to carry on future generations here. You are right though Eva, it is not the retirees that cause many of the problems that I see.

I urge everyone to get together and fight for recall on those people in cityhall if they raise the taxes. Cut spending and layoff.live within your means and stop wasteful spending on bogus crap. Roads ,bridges ect are more of a priority then wasting money to beautify up the park as long as the economy is in recession. Not the right time to increase taxes.

I say taxes should be like a report card. You get Straight A's you get rewarded.
Samething with taxes. When we start seeing our police start cleaning up our town and drop the crime rate, then they can have a tax rate increase. Until then NO TAX INCREASE!

The way i look at it the higher the property taxs the fewer slum lords will buy houses here and the more of the junk houses that you knock down the less there is for slum lords to buy..... I will GLADLY pay higher property taxes to clean up this town!
