Dont quote me on my percentrages but with probrably 40% of streator that are low income or worse and about 30% are elderly and probrably on a fixed income what type of business could possibly survive in this town let alone fix up a building on main st? I always here everyone complaining about main st but there is no way a business could make any money in a town that has none. Its kind of like openining a ferarri dealership in etheopia there nice cars but i dont think your gonna sell too many. Take out the trash and business will come. Untill that happens be happy with a new liquor store or bar or pretty much anything for that matter because no one that has money or a good idea is going to invest in a town that they cant make any money.

Cue the myself post where he says the city council Is a good old boy network and city officials are against business, etc.
I still can't understand myself and his Sourr grapes towards the city.
You would think myself had a business proposal shot down by the city or something?

You would think myself had a business proposal shot down by the city or something? this has nothing to do with the city unless you have proof that they are encouraging section 8 housing. This thread is about the dead beat people that are now in this town. Streators average housing cost is probrably around $40000 average im guessing and i think im being generous and if you dont think that if you change that average to $80000 we wouldnt get more business here your crazy! Its an easy fix even pass some residential building codes and the slum lords just seam to snake away.as fast as they came in and when they go away the trash follows.

I just think that they are going about it the wrong way . The park is nothing but another free thing that the city spent money on for no return. If they think that a new park for the trash to gather in is gonna attract new business then shame on them.Spend the money on buying and knocking down these trash houses is what they should be doing if they want to attract business.

All city councils have different visions and ideas.
I happen to like city parks improvements. Going to the park is for everyone young and old. Its a beautiful park. Maybe its something that helps build pride and grows from there in people having pride in the park and then they're property and then main street, etc.

If you spent that money on knocking down these slum houses in this this town you would enjoy that park even more even without the renovations. I think i read that the fountain cost $138000 that could buy half of the houses on "one of the bad" streets and knock them down and when those houses are gone guess what the trash moves somewhere else then nice houses go up that increses your housing value and business comes.

No need to apologize to me. I know that aquaponics wasn't going to save Streator. At the most, it could have been a use for some of our unusable buildings and created jobs, tax revenue and a tourist draw. I just like using it as an example of how our city doesn't follow our laws so they can push their Good Ol Boy agenda. I agree with you, that a big part of the problem is that real estate here has so little value. Many people just don't want to live here, as shown by our decreasing population. I am confident that more jobs and more enforcement of fair laws will create more people wanting to live here, to start creating value. However, our city keeps allowing negative activities to continue, investing in amenities, and creating problems for other building/business owners. You should be happy to know that we are already paying to demolish a whole list of buildings and they keep adding to it. The demolition budget will probably need to grow exponentially.

We're in the 80,000 range. 3) Maybe when you're going to make suggestion aka guesses you should know what you're talking about, afterall you DO have the internet @ your finger tips! 4) I sure hope you research your info *IF* you vote!!

A Ferrari dealership would actually bring in a lot of folks with $$$, which is a good thing.
I know Dan would be pleased!

Folks, until you realize the problem resides outside Sreator, you won't have a chance to solve it.
Try starting a business that could support more than a retail worker and see where you end up, Streator is the least of your worries.

I am not sure I totally follow you. I understand it in part, I just can't come to the same conclusion. You say the low cost housing is the biggest problem in that it attracts welfare class/retirees/other folks that can't afford higher priced homes. If we knock all the low cost homes down, take out the trash, what will we be left with exactly? How will doing any of this actually produce JOBS that will enable anyone to build new homes and demand services that will fuel a local economy? I think it is obvious we need more people that have more expendable income. Many people are too strapped to have much extra income to purchase luxuries. They are just getting by paying taxes and utilities, buying food, and putting gas in the tank, let alone trying to afford government mandated health insurance. I understand what you are saying about section 8 housing, I am just questioning your conclusion that prosperity will just automatically fill the void left by creating empty houses/lots. figure it this way..... i know quite a few people that commute to streator from surrounding communitys for a few reasons #1 is when they were looking for houses here there were no houses for sale in there upper price range and if there were they were right next to another "bad street". Like the houses on east 1st st they are nice but they didnt want to live right behind the projects for example. #2 theres nothing to do here. So if you were to knock down a whole street any street that is full of trash houses and sell the lots and one person puts up a $100000 plus house the rest will follow but the only way this works is to take out all the trash houses because no one is gonna build on a street where the house next door is gonna bring down there housing cost. In turn you fill your town up with people that have some expendable income which new business loves and you got rid of the trouble making trash that makes a good town bad because they cant afford to live there anymore.

The liquor stores need the low income deadbeats to purchase booze and smokes. The new stores had to see a demand to want to open a storefront and sink a little money into inventory. Apparently, this business venue is not saturated. Also certain people need to sell their food stamps for cash, and the deadbeats are the "LINK".

The amount of houses that are on section 8 are growing. It's a cycle that will continue to grow because people have a hard time selling their house in this town. Without jobs that will support families, the town will continue to be less populated with dumb working folks like myself. (that means me, not Kyle ) This town has changed a lot in the last few years. It's attracting the wrong people. A friend of mine is friends with an officer. This officer had asked one of the guys he arrested ...why are so many of you coming here from Chicago? The arrested guy said "Because it's easy to sell, cheap living, and your women are easy." The word is out, and the damage is done. That's our reputation. Nothing they do in the city park will make people proud of this town. Someday maybe the city will focus on more important things. Seems they're more worried about a couple of chickens and paint.
