Thats why you have to get rid of all the trash houses so they have nowhere to live if they do come here.

I keep hearing about more good people that are leaving because of so many negative elements here.
I also hear about properties not selling or selling at very low prices.
I think it will take more than just demolishing some bad houses to change the direction we have been heading (and we had better plan on demolishing a lot).
There needs to be more jobs, enforcement of laws, good schools, etc. to attract the type of growth that we need.
I attend a lot of city meetings and see us basically just keep heading in the same direction.
It is too bad that the election is still a year and a half away.

Dont quote me on my percentrages but with probrably 40% of streator that are low income or worse and about 30% are elderly and probrably on a fixed income what type of business could possibly survive in this town let alone fix up a building on main st? I always here everyone complaining about main st but there is no way a business could make any money in a town that has none. Its kind of like openining a ferarri dealership in etheopia there nice cars but i dont think your gonna sell too many. Take out the trash and business will come. Untill that happens be happy with a new liquor store or bar or pretty much anything for that matter because no one that has money or a good idea is going to invest in a town that they cant make any money. Businesses for economically depressed areas: 1. Pawn Shop 2. Consignment Clothing 3. Check Cashing/ Payday Loans 4. Buy Here Pay here Car lots 5. Liquor Store 6. Convenience Store (with beer and scratch-offs) 7. Temporary Employment agency 8. Rent to Own Furniture 9. Second Hand/ Thrift store 10.DOLLAR STORE Drive through any large city in poor neighborhoods and you will find all of those (over and over).

The sad part is that the rosy glass wearers think there is no problem.
Walmart has shown up to increase retail spending and Results has expanded creating more jobs, so they think everything is fine now.
When the fountain gets replaced, the more affluent people are supposed to move here.
Maybe we should stop everyone on their way into town and force them to wear a pair of the rosy colored glasses.
Personally, I think our best chance for growth won't be until after April, 2015.

Why should we put rosy colored glasses on everyone who comes into town? Why would our best chances for growth be in April of 2015? I guess your eluding to another election for City Council? What could they do differently than our elected officials right now?

Why should we put rosy colored glasses on everyone who comes into town? Why would our best chances for growth be in April of 2015? I guess your eluding to another election for City Council? What could they do differently than our elected officials right now? You are full of questions today. I'll give you the courtesy of answering them, even though you tend to disappear from threads and not answer questions from others. A lot of people think there are no problems and that things here are fine. Read through some threads on here, people are constantly resisting change, saying that the status quo is fine and justifying them by pointing out that other places have problems too. Even our council thinks that the important things are taken care of and amenities like a fountain are the best use of tax money. When I talk to them about wanting economic development, they tell me to go to a private club for that. People coming to town need the rosy glasses so that when they see things like the building I pointed out on Main Street, they see it as you and our city leaders do. Yes, April 7th, 2015 is the next city election. There are a lot of things that could be done differently, here are just a few ideas: A marketing campaign to business owners in surrounding communities, to try to interest them in an addition location or relocating to Main Street, maybe an open house walking tour of available vacancies with our Mayor greeting perspective business owners. A facade improvement grant program to help building owners fix up their building instead of trying to fine them out of them. Having a plan for economic development, with industries that would be a good fit here identified and infrastructure investments planned that will help make us more attractive to the perspective employers. Instead of creating more requirements, like licensing and aesthetic design restrictions on businesses wanting to come here, start giving out only restrictions that are justified by our current laws.
