We just got one new liquor store and now there are two more coming?
Wow, maybe our city is doing things to attract new business here?
Perhaps it is the results of a marketing campaign regarding how very friendly our city is to liquor sales businesses, letting them do whatever they want?

Look at the tax money that is being generated off the video gaming. Bring in more liquor licenses and increase the revenue from the gambling. As bad as the economy is, people didnt have any problem coming up with over a half a million to spend last month on legal gambling in Streator.

What percentage does the city get from the legal gambling? The tax rate is 30% which is divided between the state and the municipality. Last month Streator generated $46,000 in taxes with about $38,000 going to the state and about $8,000 to the city. I dont know anything about liquor licenses but if a license costs $500 a year, even a place like Bowl-Mor that only has 2 machines can easily pay for the cost of a liquor license and recoup that cost in probably less than a couple of weeks. And then the city gets the tax from it. Sounds like a win-win for the business owner and the city.

WOW, that is a LOT more than I would have ever guessed for the new machines. My guess is that they will become oversaturated, they are putting them in everywhere. If I know our state, they will install them in front of urinals at O'hare just to fleece a few extra dollars from the travelers. Well, it's out there if you like it. Do it if you like, or don't if you don't. All this money rolling into the State SHOULD help the budget, but I bet it will get stuck in the bottom of someone's pocket. $7.4 million for the state last month.

TIME OUT! Wait a minute. I am getting confused by the math here. 500,000 last month in Streator and a 30 percent take would be $150,000. Another place you mentioned that Streator generated 46k in taxes last month. Something doesn't add up here. It is sorta complicated to figure out. By the time you figure the winners cut, the establishments cut, the video game equipment supplier. I will just give you the link. www.igb.illinois.gov/revreportsVG/Default.aspxStreator is on page 71 or 72 of the pdf file.

$541,000 was actually put in. It paid out $387,000. That left $154,000 for the owner, the video game provider, and for taxes. 30% of $154,000 is about $46,000. Sorry for the confusion.

They want to attract good business owners with those businesses, too. Good business owners? Is it the Good Ol Boys Club that you cheer for that gets to determine who is a good business owner? If they don't feel that the person is a good business owner, do they just make up a ridiculous restriction, despite what our laws say, to keep them out? Coming from someone who thinks my fresh paint is bringing down down property values, this Military Surplus Store is probably your model of a good business owner: Their homing pigeons crap all over the place, not to mention their fire hazard, death trap of a building. Despite this you and your Good Ol Boys think you have the right to determine who is a good business/building owner and restrict and penalize the others. I think it is just a big pile of double standard bull crap that keeps our community from really prospering, but I am glad that you are here, so ready to get these conversations started.

Masked Man, speaking of new business, did you make it over to the gun shop yesterday for their Grand Opening? They had a good deal, Buy a gun, they were sold at $25 over their cost, and you could by a range membership for half price. I took advantage of both, and hopefully when their range gets completed, it wont be so crowded that I cant make good use of it. The place looks amazing inside and I wish them the best of luck.

Yet another thread turned to Kyle's rant and rage? Come on Kyle, let it rest once in a while. It is Oldtimer who is wanting to talk about how good business owners are selected. There is no rage from me, I am just talking about the way the Good Ol Boy Club does Streator. I would be happy to give it a rest when our city starts doing things differently.

I would be happy to give it a rest when our city starts doing things differently. Myself, the issue with you is you think you are the solution when you're the problem. Obviously there is a difference of opinion as to what the problems are. I think that letting people be over-served to the point that they are passing out, fighting, urinating, etc. is a problem. I think that trying to keep a business from opening with a made up restriction that goes against our laws is a problem. I think that forcing restrictions on some business & building owners but allowing others to have one like the Military Surplus Store is a problem. You can think that I am a problem for talking about the problems that I see if you want to, it doesn't bother me. If you think that continuing to attack, insult and call me names will make me stop talking about the problems, think again.
