Thank you Mr. Hart and the donors that contributed $100,000 for the fountain in the park.
The donations are appreciated, but do not change the fact that our city committed taxpayers to the whole $138,000 before they had any donations at all.
For the other "gift", I am not sure I want to thank anyone.
I don't consider dumping a liability on tax payers as a gift.
Why wouldn't our city ask them to spend the $50,0000 to clean up the property and then give it away?
Now we have another property, when they don't take care of what we have, this one with environmental hazards, that could end up costing tax payers.
Our city sees benefit in taking commercial property off the tax rolls?
Is this just a result of property here having no use or value?
The city manager said they wanted it so that they could control development?
I didn't realize that development was out of control here.
So now our city is in the development business?

I thought you wanted the city to have a hand in the development of business in this town? I'm confused? Which is it? You do or you don't? You need to verse yourself a little bit more in the people you bash continually on here. There are deep pockets in this town and I'd imagine that when the decision was made to refurb the fountain, they had a pretty good idea that it would be funded by those willing to put up the money to preserve a part of our heritage. Many, many years that cherub was missing from that fountain and it was a big deal when he was put back in place. I noticed that on the website of the gorgeous new Silver Fox venue that they highlight the park (and the bandstand) as an asset and consider it a draw to their business.

I want our city to develop our economy and encourage private development of property.
I surely don't expect or want our city to open a plastics manufacturing business to employ citizens.

I doubt that our city has plans to do that Myself. I'm also pretty sure that they weighed the odds for and against before accepting that property.

So since you have all the answers why don't you make out a plan to bring our town back to life..... Oh wait that isn't your job, it is just your job to sit back and place blame on what you see as wrong!

it was voted to fix it before they had the donations hawk. it was in the paper.
The agreement is for $70,450 for the bronze recast, but the total cost of the project is $137,950 to include redoing concrete bowls around the fountain and landscaping. Mayor Jimmie Lansford said the council is soliciting public donations to offset the cost of the project.

Ok but whos to say before he made that announcement that the following conversation didnt take place. I saw that you guys have been putting a lot of effort into fixing up the park and thats great. But what about the fountain? It's kind of an eyesore compared to all the other stuff that has been done to the park. I would like to donate a few thousand dollars to see the fountain working and be a beautiful centerpiece to go along with all the work you guys are doing. You can't rule that out.

it states they were soliciting donations so my guess is they didn't have any solid leads at the time or it would have been stated at the meeting.

How do you know that the major donor didn't say, if you find X amount or more in donations, I will match it with X amount?
I would bet in discussing improvements, someone at a certain point showed interest in helping get the fountain refurbished. We dont know every little thought thrown to the city by its citizens.
I am surprised that so many people donate, when there's so much outrage shown toward their choices. I saw an ignorant comment on fb after the announcement was posted.

I don't know for sure since most everything is decided at a closed door meeting before the open meeting. no where did I say I was against their decision to refurbish the fountain. hawk asked a question and I found that in the paper.

I appreciate the response Dive. Like Sassy and I said they may have had some donations already tho. I can see the miscommunication if thats the case.

Wouldn't that be withholding the "rest of the story", like you give me crap for, even though I don't do it on purpose? Since you are Mr. inside information, I have some questions about the other "gift": Are there assessments of the environmental liabilities and estimates of the costs to tax payers to clean up the property? This wasn't even discussed at all at the COW, when do citizens get a chance to give their input on this decision, or does the council just represent themselves? Why was it pushed through so quickly? What are their plans for this property?
