I never said that a company should pay people based on the size of the person's family.
A job pays what a job pays, regardless of that. If all we get are minimum wage jobs, I wouldn't expect people to be able to raise a family on them and we will attract more unskilled workers to the area.
What I was saying was that I would rather see us try to bring jobs that would attract trained people that want to raise their families here.
With all the jobs we have gotten already and the coming fountain, people seem to think that everything here is good.
I'll watch to see our population and property values start to rise and vacancies start to fill now.

Livable wage is different depending on different circumstances, such as family size and other benefits. Could you explain this further then?
I would like to see us looking to attract the type of jobs that pay $30K & up, which isn't really much to try to raise a family on.
Right now, in this economy, $30,000 is pretty darn good. As an entry level wage with benefits it is a start for raising a family. What other communities within 50 miles of here have had as much job growth as Streator has in the last 5 years? Sure, they could do better, but getting some new jobs and having current companies create more jobs has been great in this economy and in Illinois. What can our community offer to entice better paying companies to come here that larger communities offer? Every town in the state is trying to bring jobs to their town.
Property values are decreasing all over. Ask any school board member from other districts how their EAV is. Some of the people leaving here is due to the cuts in the elementary district. Our district has seen a decrease of over 100 students from last year.

F of T , I don't believe $30,000 is alot of money. I was making more than that in the late 1980's.
But if you want a job with good pay, consider the SPD or SFD or any government job. To me it seems if you work for the government, you will make more money than a private sector job.
Obviously you will have to take on more more responsibility .
Also remember that if you get a job, think about goals, purpose and growth. You can advance further in some nonunion jobs. Take night classes in a college. As an example.

Never said it was a lot of money. Said it is a good starting wage. If you throw in health insurance it's even better.
I just started a job making $9 an hour. It's not enough to raise a family on but it contributes to my household to help with what my wife makes too. I'm very grateful someone took a chance on me at my age and physical condition. When you have no income, any is better than none and the sense of pride that comes with being a bread winner.

In a The Times article from 12/14/2011 the city council has been talking about I-Fiber. Here is a quote from that article:
"I believe I-Fiber is critical to the long-term economic development of La Salle County," Nicholson said. "We are solidly behind the recommendation that the city participate in it. The question is to what extent."
It appears that the city council has been progressive and open to new ideas and technologies contrary to some opinions here. I am confident that the city has either looked at, or is going to look at the options concerning making it available to businesses and individuals. I would be interested in seeing options concerning a city-wide WIFI system.

No answers to these questions? Seems the council has been looking into I fiber for a while.

Answers to what questions? The discussion from 2011 that dog brought up has already been talked about on here. When they were deciding if they should agree to allowing it to be brought into City buildings as part of the grant, there was much discussion and concern about committing to it. It was progressive that ultimately they did allow the grant to bring it to City buildings. They've made their decision. I really don't see anything else to discuss. I'll be interested to see the jobs that have been created and a new fountain bring people here and reverse the negative trends that have continued here.

You pretty much already explained it. If the job paid 35K a single man would do well, a married man with 2/3 kids not so much and a married man with 5 kids not good at all. Said it is a good starting wage. If you throw in health insurance it's even better. I'm not going to keep going back and forth over details. I stated my opinions, they are just one person's opinion.

F of T
Congratulations. I was never laid off or out of work my entire lifetime but I always said there was work even if I went to McD.
People today don't want to work at low wage jobs. They are waiting for a management position.
