Thanks to SO, I am telling my wife and daughter to keep their doors locked in the vehicle and to be more cautious. I don't want this happening to them. Thank you posters for letting us know. I don't understand how letting people know that an incident occurred so they can be cautious would keep the Police from catching the criminals. Everyone should lock their car doors all the time, no matter where they're at. I was almost a victim to this many years ago when riding around with a bunch of my friends and a guy just thought he would run along the side of our car and just hop on in with us, NOT! We ended up dragging him quite away down the street, and then because of ALL of us always locked our doors. Even a good cop friend of mine I told him that I always lock the doors on my convertible...which he thought was so silly at first, until I explained as to why I did. Think about it what are they going to grab but a car door handle, and not just think to jump in an open convertible. I feel sorry for this girl that this has happened to, I know the exact terror that she indeed felt! M

Here it is, a week later. I wonder what made SPD finally decide to report this.
Streator police give details about alleged 'carjacking'
Streator police reported a criminal trespass to motor vehicle Saturday, Aug. 31, during Cruise Night.
Sgt. Robert Turner told The Times a woman reported about 9:04 p.m. Saturday that two men approached her car in the 100 block of West Grant Street and attempted to reach into the car. Turner said the incident is not being classified as a carjacking since the woman was unable to articulate to police any possible demands the suspects made.
The suspects are described as two small-framed black males. One had a shaved head and one was wearing a plaid shirt. They were last seen traveling westbound on Grant Street.
Turner said officers were in the area but time had elapsed between the time of the incident and when it was reported and they were unable to locate the suspects.
Turner said the victim's vehicle was processed and some material will be sent to the crime lab for analysis, but he is not sure any of the material will be identifiable.

"attempted to reach into the car' is a far cry from a car jacking. And there you have it, this is why it wasn't screamed from the rooftops to flee for your lives, lock your doors and keep your women and children safe. IT WASN'T a carjacking.

I'm sure a certain member of this board will try to claim his posts here had something to do with the paper finally reporting this horrific crime.

No one said it was a car jacking. It was called an attempted car jacking from the beginning.
If this would have been reported to the newspaper right away, people would have been informed and known to keep an eye out.
Even though it wasn't an actual car jacking, I am still very concerned about people reaching into the vehicles of strangers, obviously their intentions were not good.
