So let me get this straight. You own a business, and on one of the busiest nights of the year you want an officer outside your door? Please tell me how this is ANY decent form to conduct business? Man if you keep going this route your not gonna have any customers arrive at your store! We decided to do this for the safety of both our employees and customers. We believe that everyone has the right to safely shop in our store. Recently my employees have had to endure harassment and have expressed concerns for their own safety. I would be a horrible boss if I did not address this concern, so I decided to employ an off duty Sheriff’s officer to be on the property, (outside and inside) to help ensure everyone’s safety. This is also an attempt to protect our property and inventory from sticky fingers on such a busy night. We have learned and adapted from previous cruise nights. Any one is welcome to come to our shop and stand outside and enjoy cruise night. If Mother Nature decides to rain we also welcome everyone to come and enjoy the cover of our awnings. I just want everyone to be safe. Thank you. Chris Mitchell Chris and/or Kyle, I am addressing this to both of you since Chris replied, but it appears Kyle is the main focal point. To be honest, I also am not sure which one actually owns/operates the business, looks like there is a changing of the guard every time a person turns around and depending what story is being told that week. I wanted to post this earlier in the week, but refrained for fear that somehow you would turn it into a threat, which in no way is meant to sound or be one. I think after the above post the time is right: In response to your statement: "We decided to do this for the safety of both our employees and customers. We believe that everyone has the right to safely shop in our store. Recently my employees have had to endure harassment and have expressed concerns for their own safety. I would be a horrible boss if I did not address this concern, so I decided to employ an off duty Sheriff’s officer to be on the property, (outside and inside) to help ensure everyone’s safety" Did you ever possibly think that your employees have had to endure harrassment and threats due the actions of one employee/owner running their mouth? As a boss, it is true you have a right to protect your assets, but at the same time, you also must be able to control your employees, others associated with your business and the reputation that they or you bring on your business. Streator is a small community and has it's own way of working and demographics. The people there are related, work together, live in neighborhoods together, go to church together, have kids in athletic programs together, etc. Don't believe me? When I worked for the city and the ambulance, I knew pretty much everyone and anyone in town. And guess what, because of where I worked, I knew at one time or another I would have to deal with these people and as such, kept a clean reputation. If I didn't like a business, the way the city did something, etc. I kept my mouth shut, I did not go around town ranting and raving stirring up enemies. Guess what would happen if I stirred the crap pot? I would get called on it because of the reputation it would reflect on my employer(s). Most of the people of town have lived there for years and know what is to be expected. We also have each other's back, this means through all aspects: from jumping into a fight to help defend someone getting the crap kicked out of them to the many fundraisers for community groups to the benefits for people who are ill. Contrary, to what you may believe, the majority of Streator are hard working individuals who care about the community and have faith in the city leaders - NOT the drunk, unemployed, poverty stricken and ghetto type that you paint in almost every post. If people did not think the elected officials were doing a good job, the candidates would not of been re-elected. The people who care about who is in office and direction will get out and vote, the one's who don't won't. It's that simple of a concept. The more you badger people, the more you will alienate and make yourself look like a tool. People eventually will get sick of hearing it and just shut you out. Streatorites do not take kindly to an outsider stepping in who has never grown up here and begins throwing out the assumptions about the community and it's people such as you have done. I would suggest if you want to be considered as a serious member of the business community, you settle down and quit slamming Streator every chance you get. If you are that unhappy here, there is always Rt. 23 heading north and south, and Route 18 running east and west. You can pick any direction and go some place else. (and yes, you can throw out the fact that I moved out of Streator, but it wasn't because I was unhappy. It was a career and educational opportunity I had presented to me). You don't see the staff of Ace Hardware, Toppings, Rashid's, Cinderella Beauty Salon, Shelter Insurance, Don' Furniture, Scoops N More, (all business w/in the area of your place) on here or in the paper running off the head about how bad the people and things of Streator are. You know why? Because they know that the people of Streator, no matter what their faults, are not only their customers, but also their neighbors, family members, and friends who they will need to answer to. It is only logical that if you continue to tick people off, you are going to have repercussions towards your business. Let me tell you a story. About this time last year, there was a church in town that had a pastor come in and after he had settled into the community, began doing exactly what you are doing. Every newspaper article, every sermon, every chance he got, took a pop shot at Streator and it's people: the city is run down, the people are dirty, there are too many unwed couples, there are too many drunks, there are too many single mothers, etc. Eventually he popped off about the wrong groups of people without knowing facts. Church members who had relatives, co-workers, friends who were offended found themselves having to answer for what this pastor said and did. Members of the church were being threatened out on the street. The church became divided, families who had been members for years began leaving. Even to this day, there are church members who do not speak to each other because of the harm this man caused. Eventually, enough people confronted the church and the pastor on his actions. The community was able to make this hateful man disappear, never to be seen or heard from again. Moral of the story and this post, you might want to shape up on what you say how portray people. You may just find yourself shipped up and out, never to be heard or seen from again. Don't think you are invincible and it can't happen. The people of Streator have done it once, and can do it again. I am proud to say I am from Streator, the value and ethics it instilled in me growing up. I still like the atmosphere and community feel that Streator provides when I return for visits and WILL take offense to anyone who is not an ORIGINAL Streatorite coming into our community and bashing it.

Save your time. I was ridiculed and called names and my PM inbox got crammed full of support for this guy. Apparently they hate him, but mentioning his "store" should be boycotted or running him out of town will only lead to you being made fun of and getting messages that even made me squirm. And let's not forget that he is ALLOWED to say whatever he wants about anyone else and try to ruin their reputation but even the mention of the fact he deserves a punch in the face will lead to a backlash of something you don't even want to endure. I left the forum TWICE to avoid the messages I was receiving. As soon as this gets read by the right people, I will be deleting my account again as I refuse to go through that again. Some one at City Hall are the ones who are making these names. Who else would have the info they did about Flip's hiring cops for cruise night? That means the people he has been calling "corrupt" for years are fighting back. Let them fight it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, hardly anyone on this forum agrees with him, but he is allowed to call anyone he wants corrupt, he can say I support crime, which is trying to ruin my rep, and talk to anyone any way he chooses. We are NOT allowed to fight back. We are not allowed to call HIM whatever WE want. This is his forum now. Let it be, dd.

Well thank you for your view of how you think Streator is. I see things differently though. I have a right to want better for our community and talk about what I see that is wrong. I have those rights with or without being born here. Well, the funny thing is...... If you never have experienced anything or any PLACE else its hard to understand why folks who move here are so frustrated. It reminds me of a story about my cousin. She was a picky eater and her mother gave up trying to make her kids eat anything other than what they wanted to eat. If you asked her as a kid "do you like (something) she would say "No I hate that" It was to the point it was just meat and potatos and not a single vegatable. She would not eat chocolate ice cream and all we could get out of her when she was a kid was it looked like poo. well as she became a teenager she became more adventurous and many MANY of the foods she used to say she ddnt like she finally TRIED, and she found MANY NEW things to like. Streator and a lot of its people are like my cousin, having never tried anything else its hard to think anything else could taste as good if not better than what you usually eat.

Thank you. Chris Mitchell Your back?

Chris and/or Kyle, I am addressing this to both of you since Chris replied, but it appears Kyle is the main focal point. PERFECTLY SAID!!!!!

FOT, from what I glean from your post, outsiders, are unwelcome. How many business owners, council members, and public employees, are native to this excuse of a town? When help or donations are needed, do not ask and outsider! Maybe a native could wear a lime green shirt, and wear it all week long. We then could tell who is a local and see what they had for breakfast 3 days ago. The "good old boys" could also wear color coordinating shirts, too. Face it, this town's morals and reputation, are not what they were during Hardscrabble Times. I doubt that you have no access to what being said on this forum, after you, delete your account.

I know that I come across as abrasive and sometimes even rude on here; I have been enduring attacks for years, and feel that is the result.
I have had a lot of good conversations with respectful people on here and they have made me see some things a little differently. I do not just attack anyone because they have a different opinion. However I have and will stand up for my opinion against the direct and passive aggressive attackers.
I know that there are a lot of great people here that know what is right and what is wrong. There may be more that voice their objections to cleaning up the things that I talk about on here, but there are also many, many people that read what is on SO and do not subject themselves to the attacks.
I am confident that not everyone in Streator agrees with the views that outsiders should just shut up and accept Streator the way it is, as is being expressed here. There were plenty of comments of support last night, and on almost a daily basis when I am in public. I believe there are consistently more and more people realizing that we must make changes for our community to improve.
They are seeing that the attitude of not accepting outsiders and their ideas for change is part of the reason that Streator's vacancy rate continues to rise as population and property values decline. Citizens did vote for change in April. Yes, there are a lot of good people here that know what is right and are ready for our City to start taking a different direction.
Yes FM, the City has been fighting back for years, way before I ever started calling them corrupt. If I would have known that they would not support a business owner by enforcing the laws to create environment conducive to other business, I would not have even come here. We really need to change that if we want to have more business and people here is my opinion.
I will try to tone it down some on here though.
Thank You to those that do support change here.

There are many good people here who want the same thing as you. I want business here and less vacant buildings, but think that our city government is only a minor reason for businesses not coming here. When it comes to crime, I would rather see the police focus on crimes like break-ins and drugs, rather than bar fights. I think all the problems you have had with your personal experiences in your "little world" has given you a strong passion to call for changes, but now you have to temper your passion by shifting your view from your own eyes to looking at the bigger picture from the eyes of other individuals, or from the collective eyes of the community. Like I have said before, I am behind many of the things you want, my criticism of you is from the seemingly bull-headedness to accept some of our "suggestions". I am glad you now see things a little differently. Feel free to contact me via PM if you would like to converse about something. It will remain confidential, unless you tell me otherwise.

Kyle I heard from a few of my very Close friends in the OTR Industry that 2 major OTR Carriers in the late 90's were looking at Streator for major New Terminals why we are less than 2 Hours out of Chicago had Decent access to the Interstates 3 of them and also had a Large Workforce in the area with decent Schools. What happened the GOOD OLD BOY Network passed the NO TRUCK PARKING in Streator law. The carriers where thinking about bringing 3 Thousand High Paying Jobs to Town Combined and guess what when Streator did that they Pulled out without even getting to coming to Streator. Guess who the Carriers where JB.Hunt and Swift. JB Hunt was going to demand that the BNSF put in Intermodal Ramp in town just for their Cars. They would have gotten it. Can you imagine 3 Thousand Jobs paying 50K a year in this town. Lost due to the Arrogance of the City Council.
