If you believe in him and what he does then please stand up for him. It is your right as a citizen and my right too. That may be true, but the difference between you and I is youre making it personal. Not personal - just business - all business Sorry your views are different

As long as they don't affect sanitation laws for food, that might be viable. Whatever - we'll have to see how the City will handle this and how the little man will handle himself. Sanatation is a problem - did you ever go into his shop - before the chickens it smelled like sewage - now can you imagine..................... Feel sorry for his neighbors Yeah I've been in there, never smelled sewage, but have smelled stale or old clothes. Dixies, when they were on Main St on the other hand I have smelled sewage a number of times. That concerns me more being in a restaurant then a retail shop. I've even smelled it in Ace on occasion.

There are sooooo many more problems in this town to focus on. Who cares what kind of animal someone has, as long as it's not disrupting or harming someone's life. I can tell you that there are people around this town doing harm to others. Why can't the city put their energy into that? They focus on bossing around harmless people, and are afraid of the trouble makers. People have snakes, rats, spiders...etc for pets around here. Are they going to go door to door and police what people have on their property? Whether or not people like Kyle or not shouldn't matter. We need to take back our freedoms that are getting taken away everyday by governments. Stand up for our rights, and quit cowering to them. As long as any animal is well cared for, and not harming people, then who cares.

Yes, people have pets on main street. I have seen people living in upstairs apartments walking their dogs. I have also seen cats at no less than 3 businesses on main street. Have you stood up for your rights against them, as well? A dog and a cat are fine - I own several apartment buildings and they are allowed - chickens are not - sorry All of you can stand up for him Wait until then next time he screws you

For those of you that want to defend the way Kyle went about this, you have that right. Nobody is going to convince me that this wasn't his way of getting over the City of Streator. In one of the earlier posts I believe he told Jeremy Palm that he was going to put bird cages on his roof. Why not be open about it and say, "I'm going to put chicken cages up on my roof?" Jeremy may have had second thoughts. I certainly don't think of chickens in the same reference as I do birds.
There is a reason why farm animals are not allowed in the City. I'm sure when it was put on the books there may have been some kind of abuse sometime. Sure, some people wouldn't abuse the right to have chickens, but there is a likely hood there would be a lot of abuse of some of the people that have no regard for our municipal rules. Just as folks don't follow the rules like dogs roaming, I'd bet people wouldn't take proper care of chickens either. I believe chickens belong on a farm as well as roosters. The ordinance reads no farm animals in the city and I really believe most readers would think of a chicken as a farm animal. Just my honest opinion.

True Willy. I think the reason that the ordinance only states residential is that no one ever thought of putting them on rooftops. Anymore you have to cover all bases,

In life, someone is always trying to get away with something, bend the rules and be the exception to the rule. When those things happen it forces somebody to tighten the present rules, like in this case. Somebody always gets grand-fathered, and in this case it's going to be Kyle.

So then why isn't there a special meeting called to ban dogs within the city since there is an obvious problem with them running loose and crapping everywhere?

I must respectfully disagree with you here Willy on a couple of points. Kyle may or may not of did this to try to pull one over on the city. I would agree that there are always going to be someone abusing the system for no regard to the municipal rules. I dont like that fact that the attitude seems to just want to ban the chickens when it seems others towns are in favor of it and no one can really give a factual reason why they should be banned, other than that they were at one time considered just a farm animal. To also ban them out of fear, that someone might abuse the privledge just punishes those of us who would NOT abuse the privledge. We just cant ban stuff just to avoid potential abuses. As Kyle says, we need to enforce the illegal stuff. The attiude of banning something so we dont have to worry about abusing something has to change. Is it that hard to rewrite the ordinance to ALLOW laying hens in the city, with wording to make sure they are caged, quiet and basically unnoticed to the general public? With such a quick reaction from the city, I would tend to give some credibility that the city is responding in a more vindictive manner, rather than a professional manner. What brought on the sudden urge to address the chicken issue?

That's great info Sassy. That ordinance doesn't seem bad at all and is one that should be looked at. I'm sure Carbondale used their lawyers and researched it quite well. The city should look into this and call down there to get any questions they may have answered.
