Greece decided some time ago that the country should offer its people the usual list of cradle to grave benefits of a progressive socialist country. However, Greece found that they had to borrow from other countries to accomplish these worth-while goals. They can't pay what they owe, and in the socialist tradition they don't think they should have to pay what they owe. Their "creditors" have demanded some austerity in the country, but the Greek people have rejected those demands. Instead, they believe that their creditors should reduce the amount that they owe.
It is great to see, on the international stage, some really clear, liberal thinking. I only hope that people here learn from Greece's problems.

Right now, it appears that Greece's main goal is to be "too big to fail" for the EU. Big time gamble. But other countries like Italy & Portugal may follow suit if the EU gives in to Greece.

Wasn't Greece one of the Countries that was heavily scrutinized before they joined the EU because of monetary uncertainty? I know there were one or two Nations that just barely got in because they had some major economic problems. I don't know how they joined the EU, but I find the current developments very interesting. We have seen any number of socialist countries, including the US in recent years. In each case that I have seen, however, the moochers are within one country: "We have never done anything, but those who have worked hard owe us." Greece is a different case. After passing the traditional list of government mandated free cradle to grave benefits, and after borrowing tons of money to pay for those benefits, Greece has decided that other countries should not expect to have their loans passed off. The Greeks have made it clear through their recent election that there should not be any "austerity" in Greece. Instead, other countries should pay for Greece's "benefits."

Can't wait to see Germany's response.

Frankly, I am surprised that Obama has not pushed for the 35 hour work week workers enjoy in France.

Interesting when you give it even a little thought. Our Nation was founded largely by those wanting to escape their former lives, and improve their lot and willing to take chances and hard work to do it. It is also said that you can judge a country based on how they treat their poorest of people, or the ones least capable of taking care of themselves. I think it's true that there are some elderly, severely handicapped, orphans and others that need to be helped. We should always take good care of our Veterans. Just what form that help should take could be debated some. If they are to be supported by the government, the government should be able to dictate terms, institutions may be more cost effective than maintaining individual housing for them. Anyway, I think we do get messed up when that group of people taking benefits is ever expanded and includes the very young that will draw for a (long) lifetime. There is little doubt that a reboot to the system is needed. Think about it: Our forefathers came here to seek their fortunes and took risks and worked hard to make a better life. they must have been facing some pretty grim conditions back home. Now, today in Amerika life doesn't seem so bad on the Government payroll. What incentive is there to WORK or take any chances? There really isn't any incentive at all. Why, there really isn't much incentive TO work......is there? That needs to change....... There are still those of us who believe in working for what you want. Never have I seen so many people on aid as I have here. Unfortunately there are some in desperate need, who have no other resources, that may be a young age, that will remain on it for life.

This is why I told my kids to stay in DFW. There are not nearly the job opportunities here that there are in the big city. Heck, that's why I left. But they want to be near Mom & Dad....
