Here we go again folks, another derailment involving oil tankers...What is it going to take before Warren Buffet and his Berkshire-Hathaway gajillionaire cronies do something, ANYTHING, to protect the general public?... BNSF should be FORCED to relocate ALL tracks that allow for oil transport to unpopulated areas, Lord knows they can more than afford to...With the sheer number of trains that pass right through Streator, I think it's imperative that local governments start taking a stand before it's too late...Imagine if something similar happened in town...How many homes would be lost?...How many lives?... Galena, IL got VERY lucky...Reinforcing the tanks won't necessarily prevent them from exploding, especially at high rates of speed... "Nearly 450,000 tankers of crude moved through North America last year, up from just 9,500 in 2009." www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/heimdal-north-dakota-evacuated-after-fiery-oil-train-crash-n354686

no1 just Where do you want them to GO the Crews need to be Changed the Locomotives Fueled Serviced the Cars Inspected. Most of these Towns would not even be on the Map if not for the RAILROADS that you so HATE. Streator would have DIED without the BIG BAD RAILROADS hauling out all the Coal we mined then the Glass. The FRA has FINALLY released the NEW CAR Standards however even with both Railroad Tank Car BUILDERS running 3 Shifts 24/7 365 days a year it is still going to take them 5 YEARS TO REPLACE THE FLEET WITH NEW CARS. The BNSF in the last 3 Years has Spent 20 BILLION Dollars on its Tracks and Equipment in the last 3 Years that is 10 BILLION MORE THAN ANY OTHER RAILROAD. It takes time to get the Rails Ties and Other Stuff needed to replace all and UPGRADE the track. You can not run to WALMART and get 4000 MILES of 163 Lb Rail off the Shelf. Now Sit down take a Chill Pill and RELAX. From what I have read in Railroad BB the Accident Happened as a Result of a Grade Crossing Accident. Just how are you going to STOP People from Driving in FRONT OF TRAINS.

Thank God they don't have a pipeline running through there.. We have a portion of one, being laid over near Flanagan!!! It is called the Flanagan corridor. Maybe it is time we work on our infastructure(sp). Roads and bridges crumbling, rail cars need to be improved, etc etc. )

You all may think I'm over reacting, but if it happened here you would likely do the same...
And yes, Berkshire-Hathaway has plenty of money to relocate tracks that are used for oil transport...But nobody ever challenges the railroad companies, nor are they held accountable...Simply "improving" rail cars won't make them impervious to a high speed crash, no matter what the cause...
I'm also quite sure the tracks through town served their purpose...But what do they bring to Streator NOW?...Absolutely nothing, except constant noise and pollution...
As for the pipeline comment - pipelines don't crash at high rates of speed and explode...

Ironeagle is right. I am a train buff, but still, a pipeline would be a lot safer.

Yes, and when it leaks, into our soil and water, what then?

How often do they happen? Do people who live near airports worry about crashes? Do people that live near a prison worry about escapes? People who live on route 23 in town have a lot of traffic. Accidents happen but these things not very often. I don't worry about something that may never happen. I want to focus on things I can control.

It's sad to see many aren't paying attention to the oil spills, fracking, pipe-line breaks & leaks from oil tankers that have been leaking in & destroying water equifiers in the mid-west. Another train de-railment just happened in N.D. BP oil spill comepletely destroyed Cat Island, near NOLA. It was a breeding ground for many birds. Ohio & Ok. have been having many more earthquakes due to fracking. You'd be amazed @ what you can find out about it all *IF you google or bing it!

Blue, be careful with attributing the earthquakes due to fracking..........these are the same scientists who tell us the Earth is burning up....
Other than Chernobyl, ( and the animals are doing well thank you ) do you have any evidence where the Earth did not clean itself and the wildlife return?
Here again, it is not a good thing, but we have very little ability to "destroy" the earth if we look past the drama.

Ever since the talk of global warming began, I've tried to find info on which species caused the pollution to cause the warming that initiated the melting of the glacier that gouged out the great lakes. Would it have been commercial dinosaur farms with the massive waste put out by them? The discovery of fire, and all the cavemen burning? The combination of the two?
