Contact our Mayor.
It seems that he thinks that he gets to determine what subjects can be discussed in City Park.
When he was running for re-election he stopped an event that our City Manager had already approved, saying that he didn't think that the subject of cleaning up Streator should be politicized.
By his previous actions it seems that the atheist group wouldn't be able to display their message unless our Mayor approved of it.

Where have you been, kyle? The freedom from religion group has already struck streator in the past years, and were allowed to put up their sign. As allowed by law.

Wasn't there an article about our City trying to stop it but the group hired a law firm to help them get their free speech rights? Yeah, I think that proves my point that our City leaders don't recognize free speech when they don't like the subject being discussed. They make people spend money on attorney's fees to be able say what they want. Is that so that they can also generate more revenue for their tax payer funded attorney friends? How much do you think the City spends on legal fees each year?

How much do you think the City spends on legal fees each year? I don't remember them getting lawyers in the case of Streator, but I do remember a lawsuit concerning the displays in Ottawa. After looking back, the article says that a Freedom From Religion Foundation staff attorney sent Mayor Lansford a letter. So yes, it seems that attorneys were used in Streator by the group that expressed their speech in City Park. Wasn't the lawsuit in Ottawa different though? I think the City wanted the religious displays and the atheists filed suit and had them removed, but then the ruling was over-turned by an appeals court, and now they are allowed but all groups must be allowed to display equally. Doesn't it come down to that they need to allow all messages or none at all? That they don't get to decide the they like the Christian message and allow it but not the atheist message, or similarly they can't decide that they like the discussion of raising money for cancer and allow it but then not allow talk of cleaning up Streator and its image? My point is that they should already know from the legal battles fought by the religious groups' attorneys that they need to allow all messages to follow their oath to uphold the Constitution and attorneys shouldn't be required for individual citizens to be able to enjoy their free speech rights to talk about improving our community. The disregard for people's civil rights by our City leaders is ridiculous.

That settles it. I am joining the FFRF and donating to the Satanists. They have a much cooler monument, hopefully I can get a replica put up in the park.

Isn't this like the one going up at a state capital somewhere? Can't remember what state.

No Kyle, we did not deny their right to use the park at any time. We have the right to refuse all or we have to allow all. We did designate where the displays would be allowed in the park. Sometimes there is what the paper publishes and there is the reality of the situation.
