Has anyone elses premiums increased to $1,000.00 or more from the tornado claims in 2010? Mine went from $342 before the claim to $656 last year and now it has went to $1,000.00 this year. The reason for the increase was because of the tornado claim I made that costed the insurance company pay out total of a little over 50,000 dollars. I think this is total bs and a rip off. And I think anything happens to a home that was done by act of god, should be exempt from raising premiums.

I would assume with 50,000 dollars worth of damage, that the value of your home was boosted quite nicely. Look at the coverage amounts for both years and see if it isn't considerably higher now. I tried fighting with my company, they say my house is worth WAY more than I can plop and identical one on the foundation for, but no go. I had 15K worth of damage with the tornado/hail last November, and mine didn't go up over 50 bucks.......

For one thing ROCKET at least you did have insurance on your home, and they did cover the expense damages. I'd heard that many people were uninsured that received damage. SNIPER is exactly right too............. your home now with NEW construction fully up to code should be of a higher value, so yes it would then cost more to insure..that's just common sense. Word to the wise though....... IF you do hire any contractor to do ANY work on your home...DO demand to see a copy of their insurance policy, and yes also DO call that company insuring them to make certain that they ARE fully insured to do the work that you are considering hiring them to do. Trust me, we learned the hard way and hired someone who was insured of course, but only to find out they were only insured to DO siding, and NOT roofing! We hired them to do a torch-down on a flat part of our roof that had a few leaks. After they did the job, the next time it rained heavy..hell we had a RAINFOREST throughout the flat part of our roof. We had our insurance agent come here........after they found out this company was only insured to do siding, then of course they denied our damage claim, and then also CANCELED our homeowners insurance too! I truly do detest insurance of ALL kinds............ ya gotta have it, but God help you when you do try to make a claim with any!! UGH.................... M

It does not matter what type of insurance you are paying for. When ever you are needing to file a claim, you are guaranteed that your rates will either increase or you will be dropped. Insurance companies are only out to make money not to pay out and loose money.

One of the guys I worked with years ago told me that his in laws auto insurance wouldn't be renewed, not because of having claims, but by not having ANY claims. Reasoning was the law of averages said that they were due for a major claim and the insurance company was afraid it might have to pay out.

I have been with State farm since i bought my first house in 1978. Over the years aI have natually made claims. My premiums never went up after a claim. NEVER. Plus one time, they sent some auditors to check out my claim and THEY GAVE ME ANOTHER CHECK FOR MORE MONEY! Since I bundle, I get very good rates for home and auto. They are also a Mutual insuance company, so I receive a check from they every once in awhile.

MnM gave us all some very good advise about hiring a contractor and making sure they have ins. If someone were to have been hurt on the job or somthing got broken, she would have sued. ALWAYS check references and insurance before you hire a contractor.

Never had it cancelled, but 3 times now my Auto insurance has went much higher, I got the same thing from the agent every time. Still haven't had an accident.......... So go figure. I can't remember the insurance company that did it first, but Prudential and Progressive were the last 2. I tend to keep policies for decades unless they are jags.....

I've had very good luck w/Country Co. I met them @ their off. when we got a lot of auto damage a few yrs. back w/ahail storm damaged car. I drove it to the office, they came out, inspected it & took photos. Went back inside & they cut a check tight then & there. Another Bonus, the off. gal re-checks policies w/in the group & has twice reduced my premiums. I'll stay w/them.
