I just saw my first hummingbird of the year. Early for me. I usually do not see them, until late July early August. We live in a near perfect place for birds. The house is nearly surrounded by woods. In the woods, there are some large grassy areas which attract certain types of birds. Because we are only a couple of hundred yards from the Lake Michigan, there are the usual water birds. The shores of Lake Michigan are a commonly used migration route, and on some days in the Spring there will be hundreds of Red Tailed Hawks; on other days, there are flights of Sand Hill Cranes.

I am waiting for my first sighting of a hummingbird. I have the right flowers & feeder.....just no hummingbirds.
Now if you want to talk about sparrows............I am feeding over 50 a day. Plus Morning Doves & a pigeon w/ a tag.

I have a few hummingbirds at my feeders. I have to fill my feeder twice a week.

dd, I was going to ask you who had homing pigeons in your area. We found a box for them at my Uncles house. I saw him the other day when I visited.

DD........ a homing pigeon...hmmm, leads me to think he was a deserter and just didn't care for his home, he likes your place better, lol!!! When I was outside today watering the garden there was this tiny tiny bird just signing beautifully perched on our back fence. Now I used to raise Zebra Finches many years ago...and do wonder if it was some type of Finch? I will admit I do miss raising these...messy birds, which what breed of isn't, lol. M

Have you tried taking any pics, zooming in on the tag? With patience, you might be able to piece the views together to read.

I wonder if my pigeon box would help. I am not sure how to get him in it, but Helen had a good idea.

I had a homing pigeon hanging around here for three days once. I called a guy who has since passed away that owned homing pigeons. he came and said they will hang around for a few days then continue on their way after resting usually.

He/She is a beautiful bird. dd, is it still visiting? I haven't seen it in several days. Maybe it was just taking a rest break.

I love watching the birds when i'm sitting on my deck...however 2 years ago I got rid of all my birdhouses and feeders. Blastomycosis took my dog's life and I wish I hadn't had the houses/feeders in my yard. My dog was a digger and I was unaware of this disease ...
so please be careful if you have a dog that digs and likes to play in the yard ..
