Block parties are often held in someone's back yard, in the neighborhood. true. retains the "block party" name because it's normally the gathering for all the local neighbors in that area.

i attended a few block parties in Milwaukee in the early 70s. there they got permission from the city to block off a section of the street to setup tables , have grills and a band playing.

Several folks, did not want to participate, so closing the road, for those few that did, was not feasible. It was not changed to private,just changed to back yards. Music started at 2 and went until 10. Food, fun, laughs, and a great time, was had for those that attended. Hopefully, more will participate next year. Darn that apple salad, was to die for!!!
