Law makers are looking into passing a bill requiring Businesses to apply for a special permit to sell soda pop. The fee runs between $250-$500. Lawmakers are wanting to make people choose to buy healthy drinks and food Then to keep buying junk food that is bad for your health .
I don't think businesses will comply and just stop selling soda.

Are you talking about what is in the cans or bottles. or are you talking about fountain drinks? I really don't think that would pass. But who knows. This state is really not finicially stable.

LOL, I guess the tax they just passed didn't take care of the problem? ( you DO remember they tax it now? )
Hell folks, just send in 100 percent of your pay, this state has no one with the balls to resist a tax anyway.

Illinois lawmakers propose soda tax qctimes.com/news/local/government-and-politics/illinois-lawmakers-propose-soda-tax/article_159e9b7d-d35a-5c74-84c8-53aad21c580a.htmlSPRINGFIELD — Illinois shoppers could find themselves paying extra for soft drinks under a proposed statewide soda tax. The new plan would add an extra penny on every ounce of sugary drinks sold in sealed containers, along with the syrups and powders used to flavor them. The tax is part of a broader plan to promote healthy living in Illinois, according to state Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, who sponsored the legislation. Revenue from the tax would go toward a range of health services and education initiatives. "Numerous studies have linked excessive consumption of sugary soft drinks to obesity," Hunter said in an email. "We as a state need to do a better job of educating the public and children in particular about this issue and the health risks." The proposal has drawn criticism from the Illinois Coalition Against Beverage Taxes, an alliance of manufacturers, retailers and union workers who say the tax would harm the economy and kill jobs in Illinois. "You reduce consumption, and you reduce employment," said Brian Rainville, a spokesman for Teamsters Joint Council 25 in Chicago and northwest Indiana. "If there's less being made and distributed, there's fewer people doing those jobs. "Politicians are always talking about creating middle-class jobs, and these are those jobs. These are the good, middle-class jobs that people want to create." This isn't the first time that legislators and business leaders have fought over a tax on soft drinks. In 2011, a report by the Cook County Department of Public Health recommended that legislators impose a tax of two cents per ounce on all sugar-sweetened beverages. Although similar measures have won approval in other states, Illinois lawmakers have been unable to get the tax off the ground. Others say the tax would impose a burden on families trying to purchase groceries. "This tax adds $2.88 to a (24-pack) case of soda," said Mark Denzler, vice president of the Illinois Manufacturers Association. "It's nearly a 50 percent increase in the cost of it. So folks that are scrambling to buy groceries are going to have it even harder." But Hunter said the plan would save the state money by reducing health care costs. "Medical expenses associated with obesity cost taxpayers more than $100 million annually," she said. "My goal with this legislation is to increase awareness, improve public health and promote healthy living alternatives in an effort to save lives and money." The legislation is Senate Bill 3524.

they will find another tax in no time. Chicago is taxing everything and now starting speed cameras and red light cameras to bring in much needed funds. at some point I can see Illinois starting to use stationary speed cameras on the interstates in the future.

These cams Are NEEDED !
I can't count the number of times I've had irresponsible drivers speed past me on I-39. There's not enough time to get a plate number to report. WI Plates; ARE The Worse.
I drive to and from Bloomington / Normal, and Pontiac up to 10 x's monthly; sometimes more. It's SHAMEFUL the conditions of I -39 and I - 55 N. to Veterans Pkwy.
I've never seen the amount of CONTINUAL WORK / REPAIR NEEDED of road construction from Rt. 18 to the exit off of I-55 onto Vet. Prkwy. IS in continual repair for YEARS ! WHY?
So YES, set these cams up and enforce those who live OUT of State; TO PAY !
I recall reading in the past; Soda, Cereal filled with sugar, and Chips were permitted on "The Link Card, " has this changed? Another question; do those in need of using the Link Card pay taxes on their purchases?
I do not begrudge temporary use to feed families in need, where I draw the line; brands, quantity, items without nutrition, high price cuts of meat, unplanned meals, unhealthy choices of snacks.
I would be willing to an increase tax for the State to mandate Planned meals and Customized Grocery lists for usage of Public Assistance. Plus enforce counseling and monitoring healthy ways of utilizing the food purchased with the Link Card.
I believe if people are held accountable, it's a WIN / WIN situation for ALL Tax payers in IL.
For those who do not abide by the Law; NO MORE ASSISTANCE, OR..... MOVE ELSE WHERE !

How about if the government just be honest and tell us the real reason for the tax is to generate more revenue.
Maybe they will use this revenue to pay back the money they stole from the teacher's fund?
In the meantime I'll decide if I should drink soda pop or not and not let those dopes in springfield, who cannot run the state, tell me what i should do. After all, I live in the united states. Remember that country? The land of the free and the right to chose. What a bunch of bull$hit.
