From the reports I see it seems the Streator P.D. was on the ball... From what I was told, they were already in the vicinity of Butternut when they actually heard the shots and were heading in that direction when the call came in. Kudos to the SPD for being in the right place in the right time. I am also glad that is wasn't one of our white officers who shot the black gentle giant, or else we could have had another Ferguson on our hands.

Excellent response time and they seemed to handle the situation quite well...

Wow over 20 shots and only 1 person hit in the leg, someone must have gone to the shooting school of the blind. Glad no innocent bystanders were injured or worse killed by these wreckless individuals. I am all for responsible people owning firearms, but something really needs to be done about people having them illegally. Tougher laws, mandatory jail time if you are found to be in possesion of a firearm illegally. Zero tollerance for those that dont have a FOID and conceal carry permit. If you want to carry a firearm go about the process and do it legally and properly.
Per the Times:
The shooting of a man Sunday in Streator was the result of a gunfight in which more than 20 shots were fired. The victim was wounded in a leg and lost a great deal of blood, but will survive, said La Salle County State's Attorney Brian Towne. The victim was "lucky" the shooting took place relatively close to St. Mary's Hospital in Streator, where he was treated before he was flown to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Towne noted. The victim was in stable condition Monday.
Towne said the victim was wounded in what he termed a "shootout," during which more than 20 rounds were exchanged between an unknown number of people. The gunfire erupted at about 3:11 a.m. in a backyard in the area of Ninth and Center streets, with nine stray bullets hitting a neighbor's parked vehicle; the neighbor had nothing to do with the participants in the shootout.
Towne said the victim and the participants in the gunfight knew each other.
In connection with the shooting, Meghan M. Flanery, 22, 803 E. Broadway St., and Devonta Y. Hunter, 18, 804 N. Everett St., both Streator, each were charged with felony obstructing justice. They were taken to the La Salle County Jail, where Flanery posted $2,500 cash bond and was released Monday. Hunter remained jailed.
According to the charge against Flanery, when police were looking for suspects, she gave false information concerning the occupants of her home.
November Rhodes, 24, 1407 N. Sterling St., Streator, was cited on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing police. She was released Sunday at the Streator Police Station.
Towne pointed out investigators are sorting through the case, with more charges pending. Ballistics tests are to be run on several guns that were confiscated during the investigation, including one taken from Darius T. Powell, 18, of Harvey. Powell was charged with possession of a firearm without a state-issued Firearm Owners Identification Card. According to a court document, Powell is ineligible for such a card, because of a disqualifying juvenile offense.
Another shooting occurred Sept. 15 in Streator in which a shot was fired in the 500 block of West Bridge Street, hitting a house, but not injuring anyone. In that case, an arrest warrant was issued for Brandon D. Stewart, but the 28-year-old Stewart, rural Streator, remains at large

The police cheif needs 'to nip this in the bud now and stop this now. Or there are going to be more shootings where innocent people will be Killed. Bring in the state police again and a few gang task force teams to help our police clean up this town. We don't need another Chicago here with round the Clock shootings going on. Clean this town up and make it safe again.

There were some polls on here recently that showed that many people do feel violence is acceptable. There are probably some who could point out that shootings do happen other places, probably even in Naperville. Perhaps the shooters were tired of being treated like Timex Watches and were not track stars, so they resorted to weapons? Did you read the Facebook comments on the newspaper articles? They are interesting, but sad. One comment talks about the history of unsolved violent incidents here and suggests that the criminals know that there are no consequences and why they come here. Even if it is known who was perpetrating the violence doesn't mean there will be consequences. I have a video of an officer drawing a weapon to stop violence but then allowing the criminals to just walk away. Maybe the shooters were downtown that night and saw first hand that there a lack of consequences for crime here. Even if it is "obvious" to our City leaders that laws are being broken, they have admitted that there is a head turning policy. That keeps them from having to actually provide evidence to prove that anyone is guilty, but will allow them to use it against people later. If there is someone who they think might want to challenge someone for an elected office, they can very publicly claim that it was "obvious" to City leaders that the person was involved in a crime. Some people might tell you that there is no room for your criticism of our City leaders. That they are working towards some common goal" "visio"n that they have that has been leading is in a good direction and that if you do not just happily go along with everything that they do, you are working AGAINST them. I do hope that our City leaders start doing things differently soon.

The problem is the do nothing, to thwart crime, police chief. He will ticket speeders and equipment violation miscues, but knows nothing about gang and drug crime. He is just a local spawn, in a job he has no secondary education to excel at. It is not his fault for being a simpleton, but the council for hiring a non-qualified schmuck.

Perhaps you should be at a council meeting expressing your opinion..May want to tone it down just a little.. Personally given the quick action of the police force they were on the ball when this went down. That has to go back to the chief and the mayor. I think drug dealers better beware because I bet we see a drug task force working overtime in town throughout the year..

What drug task force? Trident is the only one and they cover 3 counties. I would like to see the city start their own task force and concentrate solely on our town. Trident would still come here too so we would have 2 groups.

I look at this as a wake up call..If it appears nothing is done in a couple months then we can get really grouchy.. I think this deserves to be brought up at the next council meeting and the cities plan on how to deal with it should be expressed to us..

jim b, why wait a couple of months, this has been going on for years. Tone it down, that is what the do-nothing city council believes in. The po-po boys were probably just heading for pit stop and were in the neighborhood, going by butternut. Yes it is a reflection on mayor and chief, a blatant lack of administrative duty! "Hire the past mistakes and retreat with failed ideas of past failures," the city council's motto.

Perhaps YOU should become Chief. Then some d!ckbeater can come on here and call you an unqualified local spawn. Kurt is hardly unqualified or a simpleton, just because he doesn't march to your beat.

Shootings, whether they happen in Naperville or Streator, would be considered by most, if not all, a violent act. I think I would agree that even if an arrest is made, there might not be any consequences, or reduced consequences. We need to follow this story and see if our previous claims about Towne and his office pan out. We will see if it gets plea bargained down and what the punishment actually is.
