Some peeps have called our young kids lazy, etc ... Here's proof we have great kids! "A couple of days ago the Dwight and Northlawn 8th grade basketball teams had a game. Dwight happened to have a large lead as the game was winding down. Timeout was called. Dwight has a very bright and engaging young man on their team who happens to be autistic. The coach had asked him throughout the second half if he was ready to go in. "Not yet coach". Finally the time came and he said he was ready. The Northlawn coach instructed his players to allow this young man to shoot a layup. He has difficulty catching the ball so it was handed to him to allow the shot. Now everyone has seen or heard of these situations before... kind of. He missed. His team gave him the ball again. He missed again. The crowd was polite and supportive as a Northlawn player grabbed the eventual rebound. As the moment was somewhat deflated there was hesitation. This young man from Northlawn stopped. Completely on his own he handed the ball back to the special young man from Dwight. He promptly nailed the layup. Crowd went wild. Lot of tears. While many despair about the image of Streator these days, the good is there. In the youth, the parents, and the community. Couldn't have happened at a more appropriate time of the year. Merry Christmas."
