So, if someone is asked to participate in an honor to a vet, they are only doing it for their own gain, but, if they're not there, then they don't care? Lol I think this was great. Like I've said previously, I'm sure that all it would take was some notification of ANY vet returning, and there'd be a celebration. Imagine a V.I.P. who was asked to show up and honor some singular vet (out of several hundred or so over the years...) coming home on leave. They would ask 2 questions, "Why this vet and why now?" His next question would be to himself after seeing the shrug of shoulders accompanied by, "I dunno', he's one of scores of Marines that have cycled through on leave over the years...the ex-Marine guy at the VFW guy is startin' something up...I dunno why him or why now...ask the VFW guy," would be..."What can I gain from it?"
Like another poster said...the guy was treated and feted like he was Audie Murphy. Ben Huff, a local boy being honored at the football game tomorrow, is an Army combat vet and Purple Heart recipient.
Excuse me...where was HIS big celebration when HE came home? The list of deserving vets can go on and on.
Everyone is glad the Marine in question is alive and well and we're proud of him...absolutely. This particular "welcome home" was simply an event blown out of proportion and if you can't see that...that's fine.
Trust me, 99% of returning combat vets just want to be left alone to visit and readjust. The kid in the article seemed to revel in the limelight.
I find that curious and don't care if I'm alone thinking that. I appreciate having a forum to express myself about it.

Since you are making this a political thing, why don't you take it over to the politics board where it belongs?

In response to this, butters: I bet his mom didn't think it was blown out of proportion. Or she wouldn't have initiated it. It didn't appear that she questioned why they agreed to come participate. Maybe she didnt care why. You think it was over the top. I don't. I wish that every vet returning was honored in some way. Being honored at a football game to an alumni might mean more than politicians speaking. Sounds like it would if it were you But, It's not, so I don't get what your problem is. Do you know this vet? Do you know if he enjoys politics? As far as we know, he might have political aspirations. He might have enjoyed this, more than if some famous sports figure was on hand. Who knows. I don't, and you certainly don't. I'm just not going to rain on his parade.

If this welcome home wasn't blown out of proportion, then YOU and others who think like YOU need to engineer one just like it for EVERY soldier and sailor coming home on leave. Period.
You shouldn't have a problem with what I just typed. Make sure all the moms get what this mom got for her kid coming home on leave. After all, it wasn't blown out of proportion, according to you.

That's why I thought a "Welcome Home" for ALL our local vets would be a good idea & simply easy, on one of our main sts. that every one would see & some would/could know & tell them personally when they see them!
