I think all returning vets should have a parade and hoopla! Kudos to the folks that put it together. We've had people coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan for years.
Why this kid and why now?
I want to see a parade, limousines, and dignitaries EVERY TIME A VETERAN RETURNS since they did it for this particular kid.
No reason NOT to...a precedent HAS been set by this singular case of celebration.
What makes this soldier more special than all the rest of the returning vets...HMMMMMM?
All of the soldiers and sailors who didn't receive this type of homecoming can put this particular slight in their, "What am I...chopped liver?" file.
Just sayin'.

Remember the Vietnam vets? They were told not to wear their uniforms when they came home. The Liberals of that day would throw eggs at them and call them "baby killers." Some returning vet today who never heard a shot is treated like Audie Murphy. How times change.

Did anyone read the article? The Vietnam vets were mentioned at this honoring. So, because no one did it before, it shouldn't be done?
Butter, why don't you head to the V and volunteer to organize all the homecoming from now on.

The LAST thing this odd celebration was about was the kid or any other veteran.
The kid and veterans in general were used as a platform for a whole bunch of "Look at me, everybody!" people.

Whether you like Quinn or not, one thing is true: he has honored vets out of the spotlight. Even before he became governor, he attended the funerals of Illinois men/women who were killed in one of the wars where we have been involved in recent years. He usually sat in the back rows, and avoided any publicity.

I don't care who's "Game-playing!"
I think it's MORE disrespectful to downplay honoring ANY vet for ANY reason!!
The people will come if they know .... The End

So, if someone is asked to participate in an honor to a vet, they are only doing it for their own gain, but, if they're not there, then they don't care? Lol
I think this was great. Like I've said previously, I'm sure that all it would take was some notification of ANY vet returning, and there'd be a celebration.

I called a local business to put up my SILs name, like I'd seen MANY others up there, when he returned from Iraq. (6 yrs., & 14 yrs. Navy vet/navy guard) He was based out of Peoria, and they did it down there, why I didn't call the local VFW or Am. Legion. I was told no by the manager, I can't. I asked why & was told she had to put up about ads/sales etc... their products. Note: This was about 6 months AFTER their ONLY competion had closed! Shame on a local business too!

If I'm understanding BStar correctly, her experience typifies what most of us have observed, and is what puts the recent celebration into a singular category. I am glad for any soldier on leave to be welcomed by his community, but what occured was too close to what is known as a photo opportunity in an election year. The audacity of politicians has always been disgusting to many of us, and this seems to simply be another example of such. For some of us the circumstances in this case; a precious son of our county home on leave, was used as a spring board for political purposes.
Those who suggest such celebration should be done for each returning vet, on leave in our county, consider the reality of what you suggest. In terms of # of vets returning each year, & the cost in time & energy for those who were in attendance. Do you truly suppose all of those politicians would make every returning vets homecoming a priority?
I was brought up to honor veterans, some of my earliest memories are of going with my Father to welcome back troops returning from Korea. I opposed our involvement in Vietnam, but I honored our soldiers. I've prayed for my nephew while he was in Iraq and Afghanistan and thanked God for his safe return. His son joined the military last week, and again our family will pray for our soldier son.

There are towns that celebrate each of their returning servicepersons. Ive seen posts on fb. I've also seen airport salutes, by a group of vets that meet each plane returning. Each of those had to be started by "someone". They didn't just occur. So, what you think, is that all these politicians got together, and said, find a vet, we want to parade and spotlight ourselves. Great. It honored this young man, and got people talking about others not having had this done. Maybe that elusive 'someone' will show up and head a welcoming home committee.
If I didn't work out of town, I would do it. Maybe there's some vets on here that can get the ball rolling.
Ive always wondered why there wasn't any type of homecomings for our guys here in town.
I did a week at the Marseilles armory updating their immunizations prior to a group preparing to head overseas. There were bus loads of them. From Wisconsin and all around, piling into the barracks over there. On the last day, I kind of expected people to be lining the road, for a standoff. I should've contacted the vfw then. Now I'm sorry I didn't.

The reports indicated that it was the young mans Mother who initiated a special welcome home for her son returning from Afghanistan. I believe we all applauded her effort! The "bone" stuck in some of our throats was what appeared, to some of us, as political piling-on, for obvious election season reasons. Again I suggest that a celebration, comparable to the one we are discussing, would be too demanding in a number of ways, for repeating for each veteran returning to our county. But, I also believe, that despite our wide political leanings on this board that we would all happily support a welcome home system for our returning veterans! :-)
