No, Utica will not be next. They are mining sand to be used in the fracking process. There will not be any fracking going on in Utica. But the mining of the sand has its own debate on health concerns for residents in the area.

I understand, that, dog. However, why would they want to be part, of what happens during fracking in other places? All for the love of a dollar. And, then what happens, when the mines are done? There is too much unknown, about fracking and yes there will be more diseases, I think. But, I guess that is good for the health profession.

there isn't any winners in the mining industry but the mining company. the workers trade their health and hearing for big wages. the towns end up with dust, traffic and noise problems. the winners is the company who is doing the mining.

They can build the Keystone pipeline, but it will only handle a small amount of the oil they are mining. The railroads have geared up to haul most of this oil to the West Coast, East Coast and the Gulf. But we can see that this has created some horrible wrecks. They are working hard on making safer oil railroad cars, but it won't happen over night. I have not seen any oil trains in town thank goodness.

Just saw yesterday, the tankers are so old, they are leaking, along the rails.

Not all tanker cars on a train contain oil...Some carry corn syrup, and other non-hazardous liquids...That being said, it's an awful scary thought that one might derail in town...With the tracks running smack through the middle of Streator, any derailment would surely result in a huge mess...If it were to be something flammable, it could spell disaster...Columbus,Ohio, 7/2012, Casselton,North Dakota 12/2013 are perfect examples... Makes you wonder why the city hasn't pushed to have the tracks moved either east, or west of town...At the very least, for the safety of the residents and the businesses that run along them...

We don't get any oil shipments thru town, since the tracks carry from the dock at LA to Joliet, the worst we could face is being swamped by a blizzard of cheap Chinese garbage.
Not a pleasant thought, but hopefully no big booms.
