A lot of Chicago people went in to Galena there and bought it up. That area was originally a well to do area and built up by people with a lot of $$$ lol
Petersburg IL is another example of a lot of $$$ originally, and it was the County Seat too.

My buddy is part of a family business that rents three house in Lake Geneva, Wis. All on the same lakeside lot. Wow. There was a lot of Chicago money up there in the past and the present. Rent starts in four figures for a week.

Some of us would be happy to have any business that would bring jobs to Streator...

We do have the old Streator National Bank building, but unfortunately I doubt for long. It's too bad, it could be a real asset to our City. It should be treated as such and efforts made to save it. There was a comment in a recent newspaper article that there was interest in the building. It would be a big investment as well as a big risk, it would be less of a risk though with the support of our City to create a better business environment. We need to get more creative, we need to get more artistic, we need to get more positive and embrace some ideas that may be a bit out of the box. I agree, but does our leadership have that ability?

IVCC is getting into more "vocational training."
I've been to Duluth, Mn. several times & they too, have kept thier downtown as is, older bldgs. being used for many things. There's a lot of shops there too. The newer places are on the local "Finger" of Lake Superior, along with the Maritime Museuum & up the hill, to the north, for the newer stores & malls.
You can watch the ships come in, off the lake-front area 7 watch the draw-brige open for them to pass. We did, from a resturant. There's a bike route, walkway & even train tracks all along the lake "finget too. Each business on the "Main' drag, has stairs leading down to it, from their outside decks. A local brewerydoes too.
The RR Trks. are used for many things. We went on it one night, after the Blues Fest ended, w/the top singer that year on it. They took a trip around the area & you enjoyed Pizza & drinks during it. A lot of the local rests. & pizzarias hosted many of the other bands, later in thier ests. This gives a lot of support to them, while peeps are there. They close down the fest/last act around 10pm for this.
There are also many Chicagoians retired there. They have some of the best health-care there.

He was born there & I have pics of the street sign & plaque that honors him. I forgot to mention, one of the past rich fore-fathers left one of the "fingers" to the city, which is where the Bay City Blues Fest is held, along w/many other city functions. Their Aquarium is there too. It was left for the use of citizens & the Arts & Music Industry etc ....

Streator's pathetic guidance counselors and administrators have no clue as to what it takes to succeed in a hands on job environment. They did away with several shop classes in the past and now have a bunch of dummies, that only add to the poverty level of Lasalle county. I hear they do have a half assed weld program. Just look at their no child left behind scores and all of the excuses that they try to cover up ignorance. No business in their right mind will spend millions in town, when Ottawa and Peru are so close.

I like the spirit of this thread, try not to throw the Glum from Gulliver's Travels "It will never work, we'll never make it, we're DOOMED!"
Imagine, if you will, another car show in Streator. But not your ordinary cruise night. This car show would celebrate vehicles with FOUR CYLINDERS or LESS, or HYBRIDS, or ELECTRIC VEHICLES. Ever heard of hypermiling? There are car enthusiasts that do everything they can to their vehicles to go as far as they can on a tiny amount of fuel. Wouldn't it be cool to have a hypermiling competition? A different kind of cool than we are used to, for sure, but DIFFERENT is what will put Streator on the map.
We already know how to throw a car cruise night. All we have to do is change the parameters.
All Streator needs is some courageous and creative people to exercise their creativity. The money will surely follow. If you look closely at Pontiac or Galena or Princeton, there was probably some creative nut at the beginning before there was any money.

Good idea, but do not invite the carjackers, to the event.

All Streator needs is some courageous and creative people to exercise their creativity. I sarcastically impersonate Glum all the time, I didn't know his name though. There are some people here that don't like different. They think that buildings should all be the same type of color and want to legislate against different. They think hens should be on farms and no place different. They give different types of business extreme restrictions that don't even follow our laws, keeping them out. Maybe things will be different here some day, maybe pigs will fly too!

Since I hadn't heard the songin quite a while, I looked it up & found a site that many are attempting to interpet what it meant. So far, I only found that the 1st few lines refer to Duluth ... it seems. As he was noted for in his drug-induced haze, he tosses many things in the mix that aren't really related, but are/was his view on the world, people & his own life @ the time. www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2266Yes, DD it has changed & the city has much to offer & keeps the old downtown bldgs. w/out tearing them down too. Nice pun too.
