Mom would start baking Christmas Cookies right after Thanksgiving, and not stop. Far Too Many! The iced sugar cookies always went quickest but there are many more subtle treats, I like the pinwheels, kolatzkes (don't know if I'm spelling that right) apricot and cherry, and something called a chocolate drop cake, which is a cross between a brownie and a cookie. Merry Christmas, I'm getting hungry!

My momma's roll out sugar cookies. Same ones, decorated the exact same way, year after year. Wish I had some now.

Always liked the Gingerbread Men my Grandmother used to make. One year she made one that had one leg smaller than the others. Now in retrospect, my sister and I laugh about "little Moe with the gimpy leg"

I would be the size of a barn if there were Christmas goodies around the house for that LONG of a period of time..... NO WILL POWER HERE, NONE ! ! !
I need a recipe for a Good Old Fashioned..... "Icebox Cookie"..... hubby's Grandmother couldn't keep the dough in the house long enough to bake the cookies. We've been married nearly 39yrs. SADLY ENOUGH....... the recipe went to the grave with her. God rest her soul...... the poor woman made "hundreds of batches of these cookies" and rarely were they ever baked.

I will check with Mom for her icebox cookie recipe! The pinwheels are similarly made, just two layers of dough instead of one.

icebox cookies: bake at 400F until bottoms lightly brown (if you make it that far)
1/2 lb. butter 1/2 c brown sugar 1/2 c white sugar 2 eggs 2-1/2 to 3 cups flour 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/4 c chopped almonds
The flour thing is mystical grandmother stuff, you just add flour until "it looks right". This should make 3 or so medium sized rolls to put in refrigerator. (if you get that far) Then cut into slices (if you get that far) and bake (if you get that far)
good luck!

This recipe sounds GOOD and the dough sounds good to eat too. Thank you "fos" for the recipe. (I know raw eggs are a big "NO NO".... but he's still hanging in there so I doubt it's going to give him more than a belly ache) Back when Grandma made the cookies/dough, pies were kept in the cupboard along with the butter dish. Anything good to eat didn't last long enough to spoil. The only problems back then were Grease ants. They were kept at bay with some old fashioned concoction made with a trail of dried herbs that had lost it's flavor. Our milk, eggs, butter, and other dairy products were delivered (by horse and wagon) and placed in a tin box on the front porch; year round. BOY am I giving out my true age ! Again, thank you for the recipe.... * * * H A P P Y * * * N E W * * * Y E A R * * * S T R E A T O R O N L I N E * * * 2 0 1 4 * * *
