yes, auto may mean you're turning the front axles all the time

Perhaps finding some aftermarket locking hubs would release the front axles? It may be a case of the transfer case is going to spin the front driveline no matter what you do?
The Jeep Commander is set up with auto 4 WD also
I have a Tundra 4 X 4 with A-track that ratchets when one of the wheels starts slipping. It does work great, but I don't like the ratcheting sound of the ABS controlling the wheel spin. It has a similar switch to Fords 4 X 4 control on the dash 2 WD.., 4 H, 4L. I haven't towed the Space Shuttle with it yet, but I think it's a keeper. It flys right through snow, and is easy to handle with the Vehicle Skid Control. The rear driveshaft looks like it came off an 18 wheeler, and works great with the 6 speed auto trans, and 4:10 rear end.

I have the rear wheel drive with limited slip, but can't lock the rear axle, although the rear locker is available on the limited model.
