Does anyone Know about that shop (homebaker's place) to help out getting a homeless shelter? I saw something on face book. But did not know that the city of Streator would allow a homeless shelter to come.

Why wouldn't they? There was a homeless shelter here for several years during the winter months.

I was told by the guy running that store that they bought the Ashinger Electric building and was planning to turn it into a shelter.
It's good to see a use for another building and I like the idea of there being a resource for people that may experience hard times, but it would be nice if there wasn't much of a need for it.

i think the homeless shelter quit operating because of the lack of volunteers to stay at night.

I was told the same thing. I was also told that all PROCEEDS from the Sale of any Items at the Thrift Store go to the Homeless Shelter.

i think the homeless shelter quit operating because of the lack of volunteers to stay at night. I was told by someone that used to volunteer that one of the reasons they shut down was that most nights, they had no one utilize the facility. You can't force anyone to come take advantage. Maybe at this time it would be utilized by more.

not all homeless people seek shelter as seen in the big cities like Chicago. I have seen many living along the river, in their cars or in abandoned houses in Streator. many will not seek out shelter because of mental health issues helencrump. that could very well be one of the reasons.

Yes, dive. That's what I meant when I said you can't force them. It's unfortunate that there are people that are homeless. But, some of them choose to be. Some of them do have families that would take them in, or assist them, but for one reason or another, they don't seek them out.

Mental ilness can cause fear and distrust. While ending mass institutionalizing people needed to be changed it also created a different problem. Even those who do get hospital care it only lasts a few days when they call them stabilized and then send thm back out eith only 30 day med supply. Go sign up at (mental health service). Yeah right. Wait couple weeks to get intake appointment. Then wait several weeks to a month to see a counselor to set up your treatmwnt plan. The wait another 2-3 months after that to see Dr for meds. In the meantime the meds you got from the hospital ran out long ago and you have already been back to where you started

I think that Streator needs a homeless shelter. I have almost experience being homeless and that feeling for me sucks. In my situation, had to do with family issues with an inheritance. Hopefully will be in the house prior to Christmas though. Still a fight among lawyers. Every body does have different situation that causes them to be homeless. But just to know that there is somewhere to keep warm for the night is also nice to know whether you use the facility or not.

How about having a soup place to go along with the homeless shelter?

If there is a shelter in the works and it needs staffing, let me know. The hospital is looking for ways to provide community benefit and could send staff to help, for instance instead of sending workers home during slow days, they could be sent to help the shelter.

On the note about people being homeless. Please think of your elderly people and help shovel their steps and sidewalks just in case there is an emergency. Maybe take them a meal just in case also. At check on them. It does mean a lot to them more than what you may think.

I don't believe not enough volunteers is why they closed the shelter down. This city gov't seems it puts a bad image on this city having a shelter here. And it is easier to kick these people out of town then to house them in a shelter here. I know 3 people that are homeless, and our pd got rid of them booting them over to Ottawa homeless shelter. This happened when the shelter was open here. Instead of taking them to our shelter at the time, they just booted them out of town over to ottawas shelter.
As far as I am concerned, our city gov't doesn't want homeless people running around our city.
